They have a large impressive client list because they give their entire catalog away for free – big on the backend royalty-only thing.

Most libraries make placements on these various cable channels. Many also have more significant placements or are seeking those.

If it weren’t for the explosive growth of cable TV these past 10-20 years, we wouldn’t have the opportunities we have today. There wouldn’t be all these libraries and this site probably wouldn’t exist. Few of us would even be in this game. I wouldn’t put placements on these networks in a negative light. And just as placements on these networks can be stepping stones for composers working their way toward bigger placements such as network TV, feature films, etc…. well, the same goes for libraries.

Successful composers and libraries have a range of placements- many on cable shows, some on network TV, etc.

I agree that we should be thankful for cable, and you can in fact make decent royalties off of basic cable channels, like MTV, VH1 and even E and TruTv because they repeat the same episodes over and over again. However, History’s rates are really low, and Food Network, well… good luck with that!

What about the commercials they mention on the website? I presume they’re getting nice license fees / buy out fees for those?
