x

This question has come up a number of times on MLR. While we would all like a quick answer to tap into the riches of the music library world, the fact is there is no easy answer. There are hundreds of music libraries that serve different markets, from royalty free sites, mid level boutique, to high end mega libraries.

New Library From Mark Petrie

I just received an e-mail from Mark Petrie that he has finally completed his music library, launched his website and is looking for music, preferably exclusive. Mark is a long time lurker and contributor (under another name) on MLR as well as a terrific composer with many impressive credits. Knowing Mark I imagine this will be a great library to get accepted into! You can read all about it here.

New site design

[Update: As you can see I have updated MLR to the new theme. I’m pretty happy with it but welcome continuing feedback. Thanks to all that have done so!]

I’ve been fooling around with a new site design for MLR. I’m kind of bored with the old one and it has some problems with functionality. I’m looking for better readability, less reliance on plugins but more importantly, faster loading times. Studies show that users leave a site if it hasn’t loaded in 4 seconds. Load time should be at least 90% as measured by Google Page Speed and Yahoo YSlow.

So please check out http://mlrtest.com and let me know what you think! You can also leave test comments but they will be erased. Load time is slow there as I haven’t optimized that site.

Please leave any feedback here and thanks!

Longtime MLR member and composer Michael Nickolas sent me a copy of his 2012 edition “The Independent Artists Guide To Pricing Music”. I thought it was a great resource and well worth $9.99. Full transparency here: I don’t participate in any of his revenues but he did send me a free copy. Here’s Michael’s blurb:

Critique Please – Aaron Copland – Esque

I’ve been trying to get my brother Scott into this end of the business for the last few years. I’ve always been a big fan of his writing so when a library recently requested an Arron Copland like piece I prodded him into it. Scott is used to writing for a live orchestra and we all know how challenging recreating an orchestra in a DAW environment can be! He would appreciate any feedback on his piece.
