Any thoughts on organizing a music library with 3000+ tracks?

Is using the CD hierarchy a dead format these days since playlists are used so often and actual physical CDs rarely printed and distributed ?

Some libraries these days are just using genres followed by sub genres as a layout plan which is easier to do and convert easy to systems such as avid but many (large libraries) still use CD hierarchy followed by  genre, sub genre to lay out the tracks.

Any thoughts from the people with large catalogs?
