My thoughts: starting to think there should be at least as many links/you tube videos on building an interesting composition and the art behind it, as there are videos on, for example, “Learning Logic Pro X’ and “How to Use Compression In A Mix”. Composing videos that go beyond basics “This is a major scale” and “This is how you find notes in a chord”. Any links/suggestions here, for folks who already have a good background in theory, but don’t read (music smart guy) all that well?

Been thinking, for awhile, that I need to start a forum of just video links on learning. That way we would have them all in one place. Any suggestions?

I have seen some really good tutorials. The only thing is “They want you to join a paid subscription after showing you a few really well done basics..”

If I might. There is this guy from Texas, that has one on YouTube where he “took the mystery out of The Circle of Fifths!!”

Once again though, it leads to a paid subscription..

MusicTechHelpGuy probably does the best free Logic Pro vids on youtube, and he does pro tools as well. I’ve always liked the oure mix stuff, even if it does seems they are trying to convince you to buy plugins. Denis Woods suggested Michael Mhite mixing course, that is good and is paid, but he has a lot of vids on youtube under Mixing With Mike. Recording Revolution was hugely helpful, maybe geared more toward beginners.

I stated using Logic a couple years ago after afger making the leap from pro tools, basically just taught myself, with the assistance of some vids. So I am going through the Music Tech Help Guys Logic vids and am surprised how much I am picking up and rethinking parts of my workflow.

Great idea! The organization of the links will be pretty crucial for it to be useful, though, as there is a ton of videos online for all sorts of aspects of mixing.

Maybe set up a sub-division into instrument categories in advance (or build as we go), like:

    Mixing preparation
    Mixing drums
    Mixing bass
    Mixing vocals and dialogue
    Mixing guitars
    Mixing piano and keys
    Mixing synths
    Mixing orchestral
    Mixing stems
    Mixing approaches
    Mixing genres
    Mixing DAWS
    Mixing interviews
    Mixing creatively
    Mixing for mastering

Just a suggestion, to prevent this from turning into a hellish 105 page thread with tips and suggestions in all directions.

Graham Cochrane has some good beginner tutorials for mixing at https://www.recordingrevolution.com/, many free tutorials as well as some paid. He does a good job explaining the very basics, his setup is Pro Tools.

OK a Devs site but the Dan Worrall videos on Mid/Side, compression techniques can be used on any plugin. In fact any Dan Worall video is worth watching, a great source and explanation of sometimes complex techniques.

Maybe but I think that could get crazy also as one person may have a bunch of links but would have to go to separate topics.

Another way would be to use tags for each post and then search on tags. This is at least a start.

Michael White (youtube, anything mixing with mike, also a great
paid site thanks for this Denis Woods)
