Hello, I was wondering if anyone can  tell me why some U.S. libraries require ITIN number on the W8BEN to be exempt from taxes as non US resident and others just suffice with W8BEN  with no ITIN.

And should I update my  W8BEN’s in those others with ITIN when I get one.

    Thank you

    The rule is:

If you make over $600 (not sure exactly how much) then you need an ITIN. Doesn’t matter who you are or what library it is.

If you make under $600 then a W8BEN without an ITIN is fine.

Thanks Anon, you mean over $600  per  year or per library ?

In the second case I mean that once I exceed earnings of that number in library (regardless of time period)

I can’t remember if it’s per year or ever.

When you get your ITIN you should just update all libraries with it. Surely it’s easier that way? Then you don’t have to think about it ever again…

Is there anyone who knows if it is possible to use EIN instead of ITIN?

I know of that EIN is easier to be issued than ITIN (maybe doesn’t need passport notarization).

If you’re in London, UK, you can get your passport copy notarized for free at the US embassy tax office.

To answer your question: I have heard of other people using an EIN instead of an ITIN, yes.
