Ah yes, now I see that I was confusing mechanical royalties with performance royalties. 🙂

For example: Is it possible to give away your songs for free if you’re member of BMI/ASCAP (given that those songs are not registered with them)?

With the German PRO GEMA you would have to pay royalities for selling/publishing (for example as a music stream) your own music on your own website. (thus it’s not possible to offer something for free).
