I used Soundcloud for a number of years but now use my own website. I build a private URL with a playlist. I can still track if it’s been played, and one of the main reasons for doing this over SoundCloud is the ads on SoundCloud could potentially kill a listen if the end listener has to sit through ads first. I saw this point somewhere in a video from a music supervisor (I believe) and since then I’ve used my website unless the relationship is already established. That said, I’ve heard great things about Reelcrafter and Disco, too. Disco could potentially be a great option if you might want to eventually build your own library.

@afilion the library has told me more than once that I needed to wait longer. Not holding my breath at this point (coming up on 15 months), but if I don’t see anything in the next couple of months, I’ll definitely see what I can make happen as it is very frustrating. Not all of these were promos – some were during newscasts/programs on FOX & FOX Business so I would think there would be cue sheets associated.

An update on this: it’s been a number of months since I started this thread, and still no cue sheets from FOX. It’s maddening. So many placements and airings… mind-boggling how they can get away with this. I have to assume it’s not malicious, but crazy how antiquated the tracking systems are. SO much money left on the table.

I think your idea is a good one. If they are a long-term non-exclusive part of your catalog, there is little risk to this, in my opinion. You’ll definitely pick up some additional Content ID revenue over time, and depending on how far and wide they spread, 100 + tracks are not inconsequential. I would love to hear the results in a year or two if you decide to do this!

Thank you all for the feedback. That’s pretty unfortunate that they would be doing this in this manner, but it’s the game. yzzman1, how long did it take for you to receive the cue sheets/payment from when those placements aired on Fox? More than a year?

I was approached by one of the libraries I write for to take a crack at a theme for a reality show a couple of years ago. It was a fun experience! Unfortunately, I didn’t land it, but another of their composers did nail it, so that was cool.

My guess is kind of like the others above – there probably isn’t one clear-cut path. I would agree with Art that the better you network and express interest in doing stuff like that, the more likely it is, but even that wouldn’t be a guarantee. Just might increase the odds.
