Lowest domestic quarterly payout in years here.

Has anyone here switched PROs (specifically to BMI from ASCAP)? One aspect in particular I’m worried about is any gap in royalty collection.

Sales have absolutely slowed down, and I’ve fed them (though not as frequently) with much higher quality music. I’ve stopped submitting to most and have pretty much switched gears to exclusive this year.

I would certainly agree, especially the further I get into this business. I’ve deleted two catalogs completely from non lucrative libraries over the past few months.

It’s funny because when I started doing this I definitely had the “put your music everywhere you can” approach. I’m seeing though that method is not ideal, for me anyway. Trim the fat.

30 dollars has always been the lowest I’d go. 40 dollars has been my minimun this year.

Thanks soundslikejoe for that info, I’m definitely looking into competitrack!

That’s disappointing in regards to Tunesat, Chuck. It seems odd that they wouldn’t follow through with the detections as they said. Definitely helps me make up my mind.

Thanks for all of the input everyone, much appreciated!

Wow that’s a lot, Art! Hopefully you can collect on that.

Thanks for the in depth answer, Glen. I could imagine tracking that info down for a :10 spot to be quite difficult/impossible. It is a bit frustrating to know it that it’s been being aired multiple times a day for however long. It sounds like it’s an ad for an animal show on the network, I don’t suppose it being network related makes it easier?

That’s pretty disappointing about the RF model. I was always under the impression that a broadcaster had to pay royalties for any broadcast scenario, regardless of where the license was purchased. Not sure where I picked that up, wishful thinking maybe. I suppose maybe the fact that you are required to enter PRO info for some RF libraries led me to that conclusion as well. I do have music in non RF libraries too, so it’s possible that it wasn’t purchased through one (if that would give me a better case).

    Thanks again, very helpful!

Thanks Art, yes definitely helpful! It does sound as if it’s a commercial as a voice comes in at the very end of the clip. Does anyone have any experience with ASCAP in regards to collecting for commercials?
