BMI Payday Today

Great BMI payday today 3-23-2012, best one ever for me. Hope everyone is having similar success with their PRO payments!

A couple of points. Out of the hundreds of placements on my statement very, very few were from exclusive deals. All the rest were non-exclusive re-titles. If there is a death knell for non-exclusives and PRO payments I’m not seeing it. Also income for royalty free sites has been, and continues to be, a very small percentage of my PRO income.

  1. I am a writer at BMI but haven’t registered my titles yet.
Do you recommend “music makers” at all?
Lastly do you recommend tune core publishing at all? Or should I just focus on BMI?
Thanks for your help, I am just starting. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Tess, you should register your titles with BMI. As for Tunecore, use the search box in the upper right and search for Tunecore. There have been a number of discussions about the them. Don’t know what you mean by โ€œmusic makersโ€. Also you should post your questions on the forum here. You probably get quicker results.

  2. My BMI payment was the best so far too: lower 5 figures with 400 tracks circling in a few non-exclusive libraries. So yes, I don’t see whats wrong with non-exclusive, all re-titles.

    • Awesome Music Pro! Well done! Thanks for sharing.
How long have they been circling in those libraries for?
I only just reached 500 very recently, does that mean that I might be seeing the royalties figures go up in time to come?
Placements seem to be increasing gradually from what I can tell, just wondering how high the backend hill could go up for.

      • I think that it would be risky to extrapolate what you might earn based solely upon the number of tracks you have. The are other variables. The type(s) of music probably has/have as much impact on backend royalties as the number of tracks.

        • I agree with MichaelL. There is no direct correlation in my experience btw quantity of tracks and amount of money earned. In other words, you can’t just say b/c X number of tracks equals Y amount of money that you can double X and that will automatically double Y. It still boils down to specific needs of production companies, timing, style, luck, market saturation, etc, etc. I have increased my number of tracks (and quality) to a greater degree than my PRO checks have increased.

        • Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this MichaelL & Blind.
Yes, I am quite aware of the many variables. Just wanted to have a rough gauge of the possibilities.

  3. Hi everyone. I have about 500 signed tracks out there and recently received my highest royalties payment in a quarter. Just reaching the early 4 figure mark.
I’m aiming to get a 1000 tracks signed eventually.
I know it might be different for everyone but just wondering for those of you who have a thousand tracks or more out there, what is the average PRO quarterly payment that you see? I just need some rough figures to work with.
I am tryna estimate what kind of earnings I might be expecting when I get to a 1000 tracks, so I can plan better.
    Thanks.

      • Thanks so much Art for sharing these infos. I have on average abt 3-5 alternate mixes for each of these, I also include stingers for each alt mix. I’m hoping for 5 figures to come and thinking that it might be taking a bit longer becos 1) I’m not with a US-Pro 2) I’ve only reached this number of tracks not too long ago, so it might take a bit of time to show or bear fruit. However, I am aware that there are many variables too, so x number of tracks does not always equal to y amt of royalties etc.
        Deeply appreciate your sharing though.
Hope you are having a nice Easter break too.
        Regards,
        AxD

    • Hey AxD,

I have about 400-500 tracks out there in a variety of genres and about 60-70 tracks with vocals, not counting alternate mixes. I’m in the mid four figure range and it’s been increasing steadily for the past year or so. Like you, a lot of my music has been submitted within the past year so I’m still waiting for them to get into the system and make their rounds.

      Best,
      d.C.

  4. My BMI statement was twice as much than last time
and more money came from foreign royalties than U.S.
All still micro money if you look at the payout but then
when you multiply by hundreds or thousands things really add up.

  5. Hi Art, great to hear you had a good payout this quarter. Unfortunately my BMI statement wasn’t as promising. I’m still researching the different libraries that can give me the best results. Like you, I haven’t seen much action from the exclusives but to be fair, I haven’t been working with them as long as with the non-exclusives that are getting me placement and PRO money.

    • Thanks Anon,

It’s taken me a number of years and probably 15 to 20 different music libraries to find out which ones I would have the best results with. If you spend much time on MLR you will find every composer has different results with different libraries. The libraries that I am having the most success with are the ones I got accepted into as they were starting up. I venture to say that a lot of what is getting placed would not be accepted into those same libraries today.

So, you need to do your homework, try a lot of libraries and practice patience and persistence. There are no shortcuts!

    • Thanks Michael. Hope April 9th is a great day for you!

I’ve been a bit burnt out on music lately and moving to a new home is another major distraction so this sure helps to get the juices flowing!
