    Hello Guys,

Do I need to register every song I submit to a library with BMI (or whatever PRO) in order to receive performance royalties? Or is that I only need my PRO member number, and the cue sheet submitted by the licensee will ensure that I get performance royalties?

Generally speaking the library would register the song with your PRO if they are collecting the publishing income. Registered or not the song will get picked up off of the cue sheet anyway (if it’s on the cue sheet correctly).

On a slightly different topic, but royalties none the less. I have one of my songs on The Walking Dead DVD (Behind the scenes/making of) from season 1 that I heard recently, but have not gotten anything for it. The song played for 45 seconds. I was hoping to see something on my latest BMI statement. I contacted BMI, and they said they don’t collect royalties for music from DVDs!! I thought that very strange. Is that really true? Also, how can I go about getting something for it. I am on royalty free sites too, but that song hasn’t been purchased before, at least to my knowledge.

True. The PROs collect money for broadcast performances, not from DVDs.
You may be looking for some kind of mechanical. You could try Harry Fox Agency.
How did your music get onto the DVD? You need to start there.

Well, that’s a bummer about the dvds. I have no idea how it got there. A friend of mine who played on that particular track rented the dvd and yelled “hey, that’s me!!” He told me about it and sent me the link, and sure enough, it was my track. Worked perfectly for all the blood and guts! Had he not heard it, I wouldn’t know about it. To my knowledge, it has not been purchased off any of the sites I send music to. I guess I’ll try Harry Fox, or I could try to “friend” the supervisor on Linkedin. Doubt if he’d try to find info on one of a thousands pieces of music! Thanks for your help. Much appreciated!

You can find out, just takes some digging. Try finding the production company and/or the music editor or music supervisor. It’s been my experience when you are trying to track someone potentially using your music without a license, they respond very well.
