I bit the bullet (and I mean hard!) and ordered Symphobia and Heavyocity Damage. Not necessarily to use together. I’m also looking for an orchrstral rum type program but here’s the catch.
I don’t want a flat out loop library which makes whatever I do still have that familiar footprint, I also don’t want a program where I have to input every individual hit. That leaves out True Strike. Storm drum 2 has some loops and phrases that I can edit I believe but seems like it’s getting kind of old.
Also considering vir2 Elite Orchestral Percussion.
Get the picture. I’m not formally trained but I don’t want loops I can’t put my own footprint on. Maybe something like Damage but for orchestral stuff.
Any ideas?June 25, 2012 at 1:35 pm #5886PatParticipantNever mind. I’m leaning toward SD2. Seems to be more me.
June 25, 2012 at 1:52 pm #5887MichaelLParticipantPat. SD2 is very old. Look into Drums of War from Cinesamples or Epic Taikos from 8dio.
Symphobia is very deep, very powerful, but you could have saved money by going with Project SAM’s Orchestral Essentials. Probably more than enough for what you’ll do.
As far as making your own footprint goes, you’re stocking up on sounds for which there is a well worn path. You’re going to need to use them in a unique way.June 25, 2012 at 2:53 pm #5888PatParticipantHi Michael!
Yeah, I was aware of the price difference. I used Try-sound.com and downloaded all three to play with, Sam’s Essentials,Symphobia 1 and 2 and decided since I have no plans on buying this type of software again for a very long time, I went big and got Symphobia. I don’t know how deep I really have no idea how deep I may want to get into it in the future but I know I have that option.
I agree on the SD2 being old but what kept my interest was the fact that It comes with performances I can edit which is what I meant when I said my own footprint. Not so much trying to break new ground per se but if you hear a performance that I edited, you may know the software but you might not be able to pick out the performance.
I checked out Taiko’s but thought it was a little too specialized. I want something a little broader.
Drums of war2 I like. Great sound. I’m checking that out now. I may download it and play with it.
Thanks for your input!June 25, 2012 at 4:33 pm #5889woodsdenisParticipantPat:

Any ideas?First of all congrats on purchase, expensive but worth it. Damage especially is brilliant, check out the tutorials on the Heavyocity Facebook page.
When you talk about orchestral drums these days anything really goes. Taiko drums aren’t strictly orchestral but fit into big “trailer” type stuff. Even though Damage isn’t strictly orchestral either it can easily fit into the big drum hit and metal percussion side of it. A big Damage drum hit in context will sound very orchestral even though its origins aren’t.
If you are looking for really authentic orchestral drums (tympani, bass drums etc) there are a few specialist libs that do this specifically. You seem to be talking about a hybrid set of sounds
June 25, 2012 at 4:46 pm #5890PatParticipantHi Dennis,
Thanks. Yeah,I think hybrid would be a good way of putting it.
I was pretty impressed with Damage and the fact that you can go in there and do things with it but you don’t have to input a note at a time for each drum. Just not into that. That’s why I was considering SD2 because of the performances and loops that I could edit but at the same time, I don’t want to drag down the quality of the big buck Symphobia with with a perc program that’s 4 years old isn’t it’s equal sound wise. Part of me thinks all it takes is some eqing ad it’ll be as good as new. Maybe I’ll just stick to damage till I decide on something.
Between getting Symphobia and Damage, I should have enough to keep me busy for some time.June 25, 2012 at 5:21 pm #5891PatParticipantI’ll be Damned. Forgot I also have Heavyocity’s Evolve. Ok. That’s it. I don’t need any more for now.

June 25, 2012 at 7:04 pm #5893PatParticipantWhat are you using for cymbals and snares? Seems the best libraries are focused on either toms or taikos who’s got it all?

You get a great collection of drums, really nice sticks and snares and a decent cymbal patch.
But for cymbals alone, check out some of the offerings from
Nine Volt Audio and Cinesamples.June 25, 2012 at 8:43 pm #5895PatParticipantJust so happens I checked out Apocalypse Percussion Ensemble earlier today. Never heard of it before . Ran across it by accident. I was blown away by the sheer clarity. It’s definitely on my short list. I’ve just about checked out all the others but I was surprised at how good Apocalypse sounded. Thanks for reminding me. I’m going back to check it out again.

June 25, 2012 at 9:04 pm #5897Rob (Cruciform)GuestPs. Pat, APE doesn’t include loops or midi files.
June 25, 2012 at 9:19 pm #5898PatParticipantNow THAT’S what I’m talking about! You sound great! You got the mix really nice and the drums sit right in there.
I was listening to the different demos and had pretty much decided that I would get it. It just sounds crazy good.
Between that and Damage, I think I’d be set. Plus it has the nice cymbals and snares to round it out. I think I dood it.June 25, 2012 at 9:22 pm #5899PatParticipantI thought about that not having midi files or loops but Damage has loops I can screw with so I think I’d be willing to do “some” finger work with Apocolypse. Sounds so could….can’t…keep…my..credit card….in…my…pocket….uh.
