I think this has been shared before, but re-reading it, thought it worthy to share again : http://www.filmmusic.net/dlx/Getting_Your_Music_Into_Film_TV_in_Economy_Today.pdf

@Thanks Chuck. I’d say this article is a MUST READ.

And yet, as the article points out, people continue to flood into this business!

Not surprising, considering it’s one of only a few ways left to actually earn an income from music.

And yet many in that flood give up pretty quick. At least in publishing time which is like geological time. The stubborn, and I mean real stubborn, keep plugging year after year and hopefully get better, find a few outlets for their music, and build up a great catalog. This is a marathon not a sprint.

My opinion: If your a musician, it’s in your blood. You’re going to keep plugging away no matter what. Many of my friends over the years just got it out of their system and don’t do much anymore. Some of us stick around because it’s still our passion and part of our makeup. We’ll stick around while the rest fade away create some good (and some lousy) tracks and hopefully some real gems will emerge. It’s all we can hope for. Hopefully income will grow as our catalog grows…

So true. I made up my mind many decades ago that I would see this out to the end. At 75 I figure I got another good 25 years left in me!

You are confusing the love of making music with trying to make a living from it.

I know many people who make their living from something else so that they can make and play the music that they love without worrying about its commercial value.

Making music that you’re not passionate about might be worse than not making music at all.
