MLR Radio

I had this idea of setting up some kind of radio station or player on MLR where folks could feature a couple of their favorite tracks that they have written. It would be open to all but would be instrumentals only. Please let me know if you like the idea. If so, any ideas on how to implement it would be appreciated!

MUSIC BUSINESS INSTITUTE LAUNCHED

I just received this e-mail today so I thought I’d pass it on. Two of the instructors are Mark Northam and Gael MacGregor. I know them both and they are extremely knowledgeable as well as nice folks. I don’t think you can go wrong here. Most long time readers know Gael from her many postings on MLR. I have no vested interest, just passing the news on.

Sound Likes

Robin and I had lunch the other day with a long time reader here at MLR, Brian Curtin. Among the many things we talked about was the issue of “sound likes”. I remember a PMA meeting, a year or so ago, where some of the major libraries were staying away from mentioning artist names when describing what a particular piece of music sounded like. It seems that record companies are getting more litigious about music sounding like their artist and trading on the name.

So, what do you think? Is this a real issue or a red herring? Are their legal grounds for this? Maybe MichaelL can weigh in.

And thanks for the lunch Brian!

Busted? Thank you Tunesat!

So, I’ve been having an interesting day. I’ve been reconciling my BMI statements and Tunesat detections for Q2 2010 and Q3 2010. I’ve found about 40 usage detections for a show on ESPNU, a college sports network, that does not show up on my BMI statements. It seems that the music was purchased from a royalty free site. Hmmm… I called ESPN and they are looking into it. It may be that they just have not gotten around to filing the cue sheets but I’m very curious. I will keep you posted.
