Great topic! My desk is in an embarrassment
SCPParticipantDoes anyone know if there’s a newer version of Mark’s Music Licensing Software available, preferably one that runs on HTML5…?
SCPParticipantHi Mark,
I’m having some trouble with the install, is there someone I can email to get some help with this? I’ve posted my issue on the music licensing software forum a few minutes ago, but I’m not sure how often people look there. I’d really like to be up an running before the end of the weekend.
Thanks!
SCPParticipantAre there any other working examples of Mark’s Music Licensing Software…? The link to the “live test site” seems to be broken. Would love to see how it’s working for other composers.
Thanks!
SCPParticipantThis is my new ringtone.
SCPParticipantHere’s an interesting article on a somewhat related topic. Adapt or fade away…Ocean Way Recording Studio
SCPParticipantActually, $39.95 is the perfect price point for me. Maybe it’s b/c I’ve come late to the RF game but regardless, I see it as fair payment for the type of music I make. Here’s a few quick rules I set when writing a $40 song. 1) It’ll be a formulaic popular genre track that I know is selling well across various RF sites. 2) I won’t spend more than 6-8hours on it 3) I’ll spend twice as much time on the production than the songwriting.
Without pointing any fingers, I think there’s a hint of “I want people to pay me for what I like” that still persists in the RF world. It took me a few years to give the market it what it wants, at the price it wants to pay. Now I write accordingly and get pleasure from music production (recording, editing, mastering) rather than interesting chords and arrangements. As a result, I’ve sharpened my studio skills considerably.
SCPParticipantHi Paolo,
I had terrible tendinitis from using a mouse. It eventually got so bad, I had to learn how to control a mouse with my left hand…and then it got tendinitis too.
What’s worked for me is a vertical mouse. Looks a bit like a joystick but much easier to use as I’m clicking with my thumb. Here’s the one I use both at work and in the studio:
Hope this helps!

SCPParticipant@Art – Apart from figuring out the functionality of an independent site, how would you word the Terms of Use? So far, I haven’t had any issues with content ID or illegal usage working through the RF’s but being on my own I’m slightly concerned that I could mess up the legal side of things. Are there any templates out there to follow?
I’ve had several requests in the last month from students, teachers, instructors, bloggers who all fall under this category:
Willing to pay but can’t afford the $30 – $40 / track i’m charging through RF’s.
I really think that if more of us take control of our own content, we could serve a larger market, even if it’s just to supplement RF income. Just speaking out loud…
Thanks!

It’s a bit of a crap shoot as to what does well on some of the big RF/NE sites, and it seems to be based more on a cheap pricing strategy rather than quality.
Also, before writing anything on this thread I should have asked Dan if he could be more specific about ‘doing well’. Because that’s contingent upon how much work a composer has to put in to make whatever they make. 2k in an RF library with tracks you’ve already written might be considered doing well, whereas in an Exclusive where you’re writing custom tracks and bouncing out stems, it might not be.

PMA stands for Production Music Association: http://pmamusic.com/member-libraries/

My advice would be to stay out of the NE / RF sites all together – it’s fairly crowded and the best sellers seem to get most of the traffic. Your tracks are well written, arranged and produced. Any of the high end PMA exclusive libraries would be happy to hear from you. Best of luck.
SCPParticipantI just purchased a concert Eastman for approx $400 and I’m very happy with it so far. Totally agree with GM regarding Mahogany – gives it a nice full, warm sound. The intonation is also very good which really makes a difference.
