“If You are a member of a Collection Society, You are NOT eligible to sign up as a Contributor or directly or indirectly contribute or Upload any Audio Content to the Sites.”
I would not even question it, and be glad they warned you! Sounds like Bull-Shot!!
This is what happens when people start selling too many tickets to an event, and people are desperate to see the show. You get “Scalpers, Counterfeiters, Con-Artist, and Predators” that take advantage.
I keep saying there needs to be “A CLEARLY defined distinction between Consumer Usage, and Professional Usage!!” We need Laws & Legislation in place with guidelines, and statutory minimums!!
BEATSLINGERParticipantI deal with session players quite a bit, and here’s what I do..
1) A Solo, is not an actual part of the Writing/Composing of the song. So, it is “usually” just considered a “session”.
2) If you have more than one purpose that you will need them for, simply be absolutely clear about what you will be needing, and work out a fee that is comfortable to both.
3) If this person is working thru an organization, or “some type” of Union. Ask them what those fees are, and what “hourly rate & minimum” would seem fair.
4) Have everything clearly written up in a “Work For Hire/Session Musician Waiver” to make it absolutely clear what the terms and expectations are.Once everything is in “Writing” at your discretion you can always go back to the person(s) and give them a “Bonus payment or gratuity”.
Hope that helps.
December 30, 2019 at 10:56 am in reply to: Ok to divulge current NE library to possible new EX one? #33901BEATSLINGERParticipantI haven’t yet ventured into RF libraries but if there is money to be made I will be stepping into that arena very soon.
I understand why some ne libraries don’t want to have the same tracks that are in RF libraries, do you think that doing so is effectively competing with yourself? A client could find the same track for typical RF fees which could be less than those quoted by NE libraries.Just from “My Experience” that is exactly why. When a company is quoting their “normal price”, and a customer/client sees the same tracks at a (sometimes much) reduced price. It not only looks bad, but could potentially hurt their business relationships..
BEATSLINGERParticipantGetting rich? That’s quite a leap. Did I miss something?
“Rich” is a state of mind, and perhaps a level of satisfaction from accomplishments that were earned the hard way.
I can’t say for sure, but I am “almost” willing to put money on there being more 6 Figure income Writers & Composers that have been on THIS Music Library Forum; than any of the Subscription Services.
LAwriter, I have had a few people say they would like to buy Me Dinner & Drinks (I’m a cheap date, no alcohol; and have been sober close to 9 years) because of “giving a bit of assistance to finding a couple extra coins”..
BEATSLINGERParticipantBy companies, you mean the libraries? I think it’s off the point I’m making about different types of music, different types of markets, and how different strategies work for different people. It’s off topic with edge of an ax to grind with music libraries. I’m not even sure how my “broad strokes” comment went this direction.
I see very little of libraries trolling the forum and harassing patrons. In fact I can’t recall any harassment.
Firstly, by company, I am meaning company. As well, I have not pointed out any particular forum; nor have I pointed out any particular library!
I am speaking on what is “My Personal experience”, and how I now feel a need to not be as candid on ANY Forum.
You can spin this any way you want to, I could care less. “I know My Truth!”
BEATSLINGERParticipantSo, in summary, questions here are sometimes answered with a lot of assumptions and the broad brush approach doesn’t take into account how what works for one may not work for another and vice versa.
Here, you want some “Honesty”?
The reason for “The Broad Strokes” is because unfortunately we are living in a day and time where companies would rather “Troll the forums doing damage control, and harass its patrons; rather than actually doing good business”.
BEATSLINGERParticipantThank you Beat. I shall take your advice. I briefly glanced at a couple so far. Curious…was there some sort of shake up or big event that happened during the period you mentioned/
Just being honest. It’s the same thing that is happening to the world as a “whole”. People have become a LOT more selfish & entitled; and when things were/are “more plentiful” people “tend” to be more generous with their information.
There are a lot of people that are here on this forum that are earning a living in this business; are now more seasoned, and have their relationships already in place. So, they are able to give really good info from a “this has been working for me, take it and adapt to suit your needs” perspective.
Also, one of the main problems with the subscription services is (and you will soon see this is where MLR will help you to excel!!) They have the “Majority” Bottle-necking at the same exact area. So, for some it might seem VERY congested; but for others that have gotten past it? “It’s literally an Open Road!!”
BEATSLINGERParticipantActually, the easiest way to “get going, and make far less mistakes” is over to your right of your screen. (In Red) under “Hot Links”, you will see the “Access Music Library” section. Start from “The Numbers, and work all the way thru to Z”.
I did it by taking it in sections, and reading EVERY Posting in each thread. Pay VERY close attention to the postings that happened between “Around” 2009/2010 thru to 2015/2016. There is a LOT of Honesty in them!!
When I was looking at potential Libraries, and would see something on the net/web. I would cross-reference it against the reviews it got here (Once again, paying close attention to comments that were made before 2016)
Also, now that you are a member, you will easily be able to come to know who are “The Lifer’s”; and will see that they (although some post a lot less frequently now) drop great pearls of wisdom, and tried & proven experience.
Good Luck!
BEATSLINGERParticipantThere are people on this forum who actually know who I am, and the amount of strides I have made by using what I have gained here on MLR; and were able to make “Really Great Strategic Moves by being able to utilize The MLR resources”.
I have zero to prove here, and it would be a waste of time; Yours & Mine to even engage in a back-and-forth..
What Majors am I with? Would be an easier thing to answer “What Majors I am not with”..
peace and Blessings!
L.A Writer, You have been “Integral” in helping me on several levels. Perhaps some time in this upcoming year it might be good for us to connect!
BEATSLINGERParticipantThis has me thinking that maybe I should actually start consulting people for a fee.
I actually know where “some” major Gold Mines are, and I have the direct relationships.
BEATSLINGERParticipantCouple of things really quick
1) Would you trust someone to show you the way to The Gold Mine, when they have no idea where it is; and instead of finding it they started selling Road Maps to how far they’ve gone thus far?
2) How many of these Subscription Services have won any prestigious Awards, or received any “notable” acclaim?
3) If you want to get there the fastest? Put Your Bread up, retain a great Attorney, and let Him/Her Shop You. You probably still won’t get any further than “the method of earning Your Stripes”; but You will see if You have what they are looking for, or possibly not looking for..
BEATSLINGERParticipantSome might call this a scam (actually, many have), but I’d just call it someone trying to earn a living off of uninformed people who want into the industry without bothering to do their due diligence. And honestly, that annoys me.
The TRUTH!!
But, I do “somewhat” understand the need to get from “0-to-100 in One Second”. Because, there is this “Feeling” of “Let me hurry up and get something, because it is closing around us FAST!!”
Once You get a “general Lay of The Land”. You will see that “It really isn’t the crazed frenzy that a lot of people think it is. Just a MAJOR Bottle-neck in the traffic at the same area”. Kind of like the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles..
BEATSLINGERParticipantBut what gets my head to itching is how he claims in his literature, that he feels the necessity to “give back”.
Trust Me, from “experience”, If you really feel the “need to give back, you don’t put a price tag on it”.
As well, if they are not currently making “on average” at least $10, 000 per Quarter. “It’s just The Blind leading the Desperate and Blind”.
You want to get the big placements, do some research, and team up with someone that is doing well with placements; and you have different skill sets “that compliment each other”. Also, you’re on MLR. All you have to do is “watch The Threads & Postings closely”.
Maybe desperate is rather harsh. But, it wasn’t meant to be mean.
BEATSLINGERParticipantThese “I can show you how to get syncs” are not scams, BUT I would take them more seriously if it came from someone “who has really been successful on placements/syncs, doing well into 6 Figures a year on placements ALONE; and not successful because of selling “how to subscriptions”. If that were the case (Sorry to name drop) Chuck Henry, who gives up great information for free; should have A Course!!
Now, for a really good “How To” Check this out. “Cinematic Composing LLC” is running a great special for 1 or 2 more days. THIS is something that can really help a lot of people; and it’s well worth money even at the full price!!
No, I do not work for Cinematic Composing; nor do I have anything against any particular “Subscription Service”. it just reminds me of that BIG Craze selling the “You Can Be A Chef TOO” racket that was happening some years back..
Maybe. it’s the season that has me so Jolly.lolol
BEATSLINGERParticipantIt’s Really Good!!
No offense to anyone.! just wish Production Music wasn’t so “Formulaic”. Would be nice to see some “Great Fusions of Music that would shake up this Dead Industry”.
Anybody that listens to, has an affinity towards, or was a part of music from the 60’s & 70’s knows exactly what I mean.
