If you can, stay away from MusicXray. The only reputable source I know of that they use is MusicOpps.com. With that said, concurring with my peers, pay to play opportunities are not opportunities. They are scams. The only Pay to play I would recommend, IF you must use them is MusicOpps.com. These companies are only interested in getting your money. Now some don’t mind you making money if they get yours. I’ve probably spent $500 on MusicXray which I could have used on an NSAI (Nashville Songwriting Association International) membership.
MusicOpps (formerly Pulse Records) has gotten a few hundred out of me. Although I’ve gotten “placements”, they were only through their RIDE Channel partnership. It was good exposure, but in terms of ROI, I might have sold a few songs and gotten a few YouTube views.
Back to MusicXray, it’s not MusicXray itself as much as it is the predators that go around saying they’re music pros. With that said, I believe MusicXray is responsible for facilitating these practices, and they don’t really care. It’s not their job to care, and that is why it’s up to songwriters/producers like ourselves to warn our fellow musicians. To conclude, if you’re spending money to make money, put more in your music, and less into other’s pockets.
