Never hand over money to have someone listen to your music.
MaxPowerParticipantGreat topic. Reading all these makes me want to quit whining about the state of the business and keep on going!
I had an extra seven thousand pounds on my PRS statement this quarter for a tune used on a 20 second ad for a French optician. You can hardly hear the track in the background! I presume it was downloaded from Pond5 or somewhere similar as there’s no publisher listed on the statement – even better! So at the moment that one is my favourite.MaxPowerParticipantAwesome!
MaxPowerParticipantI think it’s a very good idea. Too much piracy about.
MaxPowerParticipantThey have been sending out mailshots with sensational headings like ”Songs Needed For Taylor Swift”, and ”Songs Needed For Rihanna” for years, but the ‘success stories’ on the website make no mention of any song being succesfully placed with these artists. My rule of thumb is never hand over any money upfront, to anyone.
MaxPowerParticipantYou will get all sorts of conflicting information from all sorts of people and all of it delivered with absolute conviction and certainty, so don’t let it put you off!
Some of the big shows have their own in house composers but I would say that the majority of TV shows pick from a a library or libraries that present music from multiple writers writing in all sorts of genres, including ‘score’ type pieces. Your music is great so persevere and you’ll find a place for it 🙂
MaxPowerParticipantWix is pretty good. You can achieve good results on there and get a nice looking site without having to be an expert on code etc. You can also get a domain name without the Wix prefix if you pay a small subscription.
Godaddy is also good – they have flexible packages where you can choose domain names, personalised email addresses, website builders etc. It’s fun to play around with (although it eats time!) and again you can make something pretty good looking without having to be a web genius.
If you want to sell your own music and be able to deliver downloadable files (wav & mp3 etc) Source Audio looks good – http://www.sourceaudio.com/ – although I haven’t checked out the rates. A lot of libraries are now hosting their entire catalogues through them. 🙂MaxPowerParticipantThis is the ‘Waltz Into Darkness’ series Peter isn’t it? I also submitted for this. I’ve been advised that one of my piano cues was picked up for use in the show. They made the right choice going with your theme – really excellent work. Congratulations 🙂
MaxPowerParticipantIt’s a lovely track Patrick 🙂
MaxPowerParticipantI wrote three hundred and twelve. They’re in the outside toilet.
MaxPowerParticipantYes I think the implication from Mr. Baker is that you cannot produce quality work at an efficient rate. That post looks like it took ages to write. The time would probably have been better spent in the studio.
MaxPowerParticipantI’ve never counted! I would say a rough estimate is 250-300 tracks per year. Initially I was making more non-ex music but having now built relationships with a number of exclusive libraries I find myself moving away from that and it’s almost all exclusive stuff now. As others have mentioned here, you’ve just gotta keep going !
MaxPowerParticipantAll my income is from home recording. I sold my first track on Audiosparx five years ago after having uploaded a bunch of stuff I’d already made anyway, just to see if it would sell. I was absolutely elated when I got the email to inform me of the sale. It gave me so much belief. So I registered some music with my PRO and uploaded to some of the other well known libraries.
The next milestone was my first backend – I got a letter from the PRS to tell me I had generated £23.96 in royalties. Again I couldn’t believe it and I was deliriously happy. I spent the money on a bottle of bubbly to celebrate and a frame to put the letter in. It’s on my studio wall right now.
After that I went part-time at my job for three years and built up my portfolio of music (and I managed to find libraries and publishers crazy enough to want it!) I finally quit my job a year ago to make music full time and I’m still alive!
I still have so much to learn but I continue trying to improve and I cannot believe how lucky I am to be doing the thing that I love while friends and family drag themselves out of their beds every day to go to jobs they hate.
I am very fortunate, and I am proof that it can be done 🙂

Do your own research, cultivate your own contacts, build your own relationships. Besides – anyone listed in that book is presumably now going to be inundated with by anyone who has purchased it.
MaxPowerParticipantI know of at least one library who I have exclusive music with who upload it to Audiosparx, but they have them listed on their website as a distributor, along with many others worldwide. I guess as long as that’s not all they are doing to work the music, (and I know they work hard to place the music) it’s okay..?
