Mike MarinoParticipant
While I may not agree with the word “never,” I certainly understand the principles behind the message. Hey, the downfall started before I got in the game as well but I wasn’t offended at all.
Here’s what I’d offer up for “new guys,” “old dawgs,” and everyone in between: Be the change that you want to see happen.
Mike MarinoParticipant@MichaelL: Great Christmas music at the end of the video. Mr. Science; brilliant! I enjoyed your sports/americana pieces as well.
Mike MarinoParticipant@Kiwi: I see what you’re saying. I’m actually on the fence about pitching to an exclusive library that is very active, gives a little bit of upfront money, but also takes 50% of the writers share.
For someone who’s just beginning this venture, I have to say that it’s very appealing. Yet, I understand what you’re saying regarding the industry and how the more of us that accept this type of the deal the more common this may become.
Mike MarinoParticipant@MichaelL: Oooohhh, I see. Gotcha.
Actually, sounds like it wasn’t a bad deal for the second composer ( in comparison)…..especially if his/her music was getting placed relatively often.
Mike MarinoParticipant@MichaelL: Yessir. We were all asked to write specifically for the album. I was able to write a single track; other guys were able to do more.
I’ve never written anything quite like that before….so I figured just getting one ‘correct’ track on there would have been better than trying to throw 3 ‘wrong’ tracks at the project.
Mike MarinoParticipantThe choice then becomes opportunity or no opportunity for the second composer. Not a good situation all around. I wouldn’t do it again.
You’re saying you’d never again be the “second composer” again in this case?
Mike MarinoParticipant@Kubed: Just replied to you on Soundcloud.
And thank you guys very much for the compliments on my music and mixing. Mixing scares me a lot….mainly because I don’t own any monitors at this point. Glad my mixes are on the right track. * whew *
In terms of work diversity, a good portion of it started as writing exercises. Although, you know what they say: Jack of all trades, King of none.
Thanks guys!
Mike MarinoParticipantAs a newcomer to the library scene, it feels like a maze within a maze…..and not much distinction between the entrance and the exit. All of the rows and walls look very much alike…and you’re just feeling your way through. Every now and then you stumble upon some moss…..but was the moss a good sign last time or a bad sign?
I’m sure libraries don’t intend it to be this way….but holy hell….
🙂
Mike MarinoParticipantThanks Macenti1; I really appreciate the kind words. Those are all my mixes actually; it’s one aspect that I’m always super nervous about and always looking to improve. The Chasing Destiny track was mixed by me, but then mastered by the library that released it on their album.
Mike MarinoParticipantYou’re more than welcome, Kubed. My website is: http://www.mikemarinomusic.com
Mike MarinoParticipantCool collection of tunes, Kubed! You’ve definitely got a little more laser focus in terms of the style/genre you’re attacking in the market. Thanks for sharing!
Mike MarinoParticipant@DI: Help Yo Selfie; nicely done! 🙂
Mike MarinoParticipantHey guys,
As a composer new to the library scene, I’m actually trying to purposely avoid the royalty-free scene and am working, instead, to find more opportunities to build up the back-end money.
Mike MarinoParticipantMore great advice!
Mike MarinoParticipantA library I’m with recently had a brief in this manner. Should the tracks be selected for the show there’s upfront money plus the back-end. If the tracks are not selected for the show, the default is that the tracks get entered in the NE portion of their library (unless you let them know you’d rather have the tracks back).
