It is really a hit and miss business. In my last SOCAN statement I got $1000.00 for ONE placement on a MTV show. How this happened I’ll never know, right next to this was another MTV placement that paid 75 cents!

As I accumulate larger catalog and get more placements the chances of this happening will increase. And its more fun than flipping burgers.

Was the video for a product? The reason royalty free sites don’t want tracks used by content id systems is for the scenario of products that make videos and do not want any other product videos being shown before or overlaid during their video. It only makes sense, as who would want a competitors ad being shown before yours. I completely agree with this and am in many RF sites that do this and make way more money than I ever could with content id programs.

The whole content id thing is a SCAM. I see people monetizing videos that contain my songs as used in television shows and there is nothing I can do about it. Simple fact is, they are monetizing THE VIDEO and claiming that as content. Sure some of these companies claim they can get you this money (AUDIAM) but how much are you going to make? I prefer to have my tracks with good RF sites that consistently make cash every quarter. The most disgusting part of the whole thing is that it is a win win situation for Google and Youtube. Content id is advertising money, not license fees.

    Hey Royalty Chaser Guy,

I have a promo being tracked by TUNESAT on the IFC network. According to them the 30 second promo has been played thousands of times in the past 3 weeks. Am I to assume that I could potentially NEVER see any of the performance royalties?

I think I have figured out my solution to this issue. I am going to carry on like nothing has changed. I have tracks with JP, and SK and they both make me money. So, if they want to continue getting their 50% then they probably will continue offering my tracks. If someone had make me money in the past there is no way I would cut them loose. Business is always about the dollars, bottom line.

BTW I have 25 vocal tracks with Crucial and when one gets licensed (3 or 4 times per year) I make more from that one license fee than I do from a whole quarterly statement from the blanket only libraries. I also recently started with my first “royalty free” site and couldn’t be more pleased as this has also already paid more in upfront fees than the blankets and they don’t take any of the backend!

It has taken me 12 years to get to this point. Lets all be patient and just keep on writing and recording and sending out those tracks!

If I see Crucial Music going saying they are going “exclusive” I will then be concerned. So far this has not happened. Seeing that they are one of the first and most connected non-exclusive libraries, if they don’t go exclusive then no one should be afraid. Libraries are not publishers, please do not sign your tracks exclusive with a library without an up front fee and a term. Even the smallest publishers give advances and short term contracts.
