R.I.P.

Well a reader just informed me of a dead link and a library that has disappeared. I guess it’s time for the inevitable category for those libraries that have departed. Probably the first of many!

Twitter Feed Now Working

Twitter killed any plug in not Oauth compliant on August 31st, 2010. That stopped comments from feeding to the MLR Twitter account. After hours of searching I finally found the problem and a plug in that will work. The new plug in only notifies that a comment has been made, it does not display the comment. But, unlike the old plug in, it does tell you what post the comment was made on. One hand giveth the other taketh away!

Newbie Questions

One of our readers, Ev, came up with the suggestion to have a section devoted to newbie questions regarding music libraries, music licensing, copyright, music publishing etc. There a lot of experienced people on this site and many are happy to share their wisdom. So, if you are a newbie (or not), and have a question, try leaving it here.

Of course many questions have already been answered here. First try searching in the search bar in the upper right hand corner. Also Google is your friend! I have found one of the best ways to search a site is use site specific criteria at Google’s web site. In other words, to search for a specific keyword, say “contracts”, type it in at Google like this “contracts site:musiclibraryreport.com”. Do not use the quotes.

If you still can’t find your answer then leave a comment here and someone will most likely come to your rescue!

New Ratings System

A number of folks have asked for a more comprehensive ratings system. A few weeks ago I asked everyone for their ideas on some criteria they would like to see and I have tried to present them in a meaningful way. It’s worth mentioning that the criteria cannot be changed after the fact. If I’ve missed anything glaringly obvious we can always start over.

Because larger libraries are, for the most part, not accessible to the average composer, the ratings here will reflect the most accessible, smaller libraries. Also, while any system is subjective and far from perfect, it is at least something!

I will keep the older rating system results available for the time being.

[Update 11-05-2010]: The new ratings system turned out to be more problematic than it was worth so I went back to the old one. I will reiterate what I said above: “Because larger libraries are, for the most part, not accessible to the average composer, the ratings here will reflect the most accessible, smaller libraries. Also, while any system is subjective and far from perfect, it is at least something!”
