ChuckMottParticipant
Is what I was wondering too….and going forward trying to involve myself in more then the small handful of libraries I’m in right now. And counting edits (and thanks Art for that suggestion) my track counts at are about 150 right now and sales are starting to kick, no sales ever then 3 in the last week or so. I think possibly what is not being said is that Royalty Free is going to be a big trend going forward. When I started composing for this market (2 years ago although I didn’t do much with the first year stuff, was mainly trying to get a baseline going for my production skills, so, really, have been chasing this thing a year) the fear/talk/possible trend were that TV networks were going to be buying only from exclusive libraries, they were sick of submitting the same retitled songs, etc. But is seems the trend has gone the complete opposite direction and royalty free is getting more and more of a foothold? Am I correct in this assumption?
ChuckMottParticipantI’ve seen a lot of people on here favoring libraries like JP, CM, SK for nonexclusives, there are some other good ones also. Reading Emmett Cooke’s book, he suggests trying to get in 10 your first year. When I first joined a little over a year ago, I got a composition notebook, and listed separately the nonexclusive, the exclusive, and the royalty free. I happen to like AS also for the RF. Speaking of diversifying, I try to get in established ones, which seem to be a little harder to get into, and some promising newcomers. I certainly wouldn’t mind hearing your tracks if you are getting $300 in sales in one library with 7 songs.
ChuckMottParticipantThese are all great comments I think from everyone and very helpful.

ChuckMottParticipantThat’s a good link Michael, thanks for posting. A 14 hour day for me means almost a week also. with the day job I can put maybe two hours a day into the studio, more on the weekends. Still gigging also. SO is what I mean when I say a track per week.
ChuckMottParticipantCan I bump this and ask members the same thing for the first quarter of 2014? Are guitar based instrumentals still doing well? What in general is in demand these days?
ChuckMottParticipantTo put another spin on the question, can I get some thoughts from folks here as to how they allocate their tracks. For example, do you have a clear system for what you allocate to RF and what you allocate to other NE sites. My thinking being for a variety of reasons I am having some hesitation wanting to submit RF tracks to NE libraries for a variety of reasons . Or is my anxiety over that unfounded…….This on the cusp of reaching out to more RF sites for stuff I already have out there.
ChuckMottParticipantEncouraging words, DI, thanks. Putting that 5 year plan to work ;).
ChuckMottParticipantI tried it for a little bit (I believe it is still up) but in the end all it was was a somewhat fancier link to my Soundcloud player…it expires the end of the month. Might be worth it to hava a domain name and an e-mail, both of which I kept. Thought about doing soundcloud pro just to check in on who is playing my tracks.
ChuckMottParticipantCan I put a spin on this question? Really the answer I’m looking for is not to go back and continue to work on the track if I think it will improve it. Rather the question for more experienced composers is when you have a goal to write a track a week, and you put a timeline on it, do you ever write a track that is strong enough where you say, I’m going to bend that rule and go back and really whip this one into shape because it is strong enough that the extra time would be worth it? And what has been your experience? Has it been worth it? I’ve been at this long enough now where I feel I can be objective in thinking some tracks/ ideas are stronger then others. I try to do a track a week – sorry but I work full time and play in a gigging band so time is a bit limited….can’t help but think on some of my tracks if I would have went back , maybe put a bit more time into production, arrangement, well….trying to find a good balance between quantity and quality…..
ChuckMottParticipantThanks for the info. Not pursuing that persay. YOutube stuff should be it’s own seminar. Not sure where this all overlaps with content i.d. So now if your track is in one of these vids, it gets tagged with this youtube content i.d. Not sure if I’m correct in this, but a library sells this to a provider who is, say a video producer. SO then the library per your typical contract hets a 50% piece of that pie, and your track, being involved with the content id , pretty much takes it out of the running for placement anywhere else? Yet other libraries say that their youtube agreements are not part of the content ID thing. Confusing to me. Any links anywhere that explain this whole thing clearly?
ChuckMottParticipantHow does this break down (just curious) if you are the backing track for someone’s vid….
ChuckMottParticipantAs a relative newb with 40 or more tracks (but 30 years as a performing musician but that is another story) I have some in some nonexclusive but am currently focusing on 3 RF and loading them up , which would be Audiosparx, Productiontrax and Pond 5. I use a pseudonym for Pond 5.Due largely to Art’s advice am also doing several edits on those tracks. Want to add 2 more to the mix. IF anyone wants to do a search on AS or on my soundcloud page under Chuck Mott and want to offer feedback on where we think I’m at or where work is needed feel free, would be appreciated. Actually I think you can message me on my Soundcloud page. Thanks.
ChuckMottParticipantIs great info, thanks . Would like to see the posts keep comin……Want to say it seems like Pond 5 comes in strong in every post I’ve seen so far. Maybe we can post another topic for NE and E sites. Would like to see that also.
ChuckMottParticipantI’m kind of early in the game, having a relatively small number of tracks compared to , from what I understand, the 100 – 150 (unique, no alts) tracks that it reportedly takes to start earning money. Right now I have about 40 or so, keeping in mind I also create various versions. No earnings yet. Audiosparx is one. Long upload process but really like the site, the various ways that you can make money there, their history of placements. Pond 5 is another, easy hassle free upload process. I’m in production trax….maybe I haven’t found a way to do it but I can’t figure out how to copy info into other versions without literally going old school, opening two windows, and cutting and pasting. Relatively hassle free upload process in general though. Forum info here suggest sales in general there lag. Uploaded to what is now Beat Orchard, formerly Zukkio, haven’t done it in awhile. Held off do to lowered sales, and got into some other NE that kept me busy for a bit. I have a request out to musicloops. An acquaintance from another service suggested he brings in some regular cash from having uploaded his 100 + track catalog (and growing) to ten different sites with varying degrees of success in each. Hence the question. Think, as far as RF, I am making the right decision focusing largely on Audiosparx and Pond 5. Not quite as sure about others, but want to spread catalog out a bit more.
