it almost feels unnatural to me now these days if not writing to a specific brief from a library. the downside to that is when there are no briefs coming in you can feel a bit stunted. so in answer to your question nearly all of my placements were with tracks written to one form of brief or other.

finally had my first big NFL placement confirmed. 20secs of one of my tracks was used during the AFC championship this year in January. those of you who have had placements for AFC championship which is usually the second biggest game of the season after the super bowl, what kinda payments have you seen from either ASCAP or BMI?

realized from my statement why mine was up so much. big placement of one of my trailer cues in Australia that paid pretty much half my statement amount this quarter. so over all up about 30% from last quarter excluding this placement.

really good advice there LAwriter thanks. yeah i have given myself a 2 year time horizon and have spoken to my employer about it. i will try reduce my hours in the day job in 12 months if i see things going in the right direction. wouldn’t pull the plug completely on the day job as its still a good career to fall back on if the music doesnt work out as planned.

    Two questions:
    1) Is your current full-time job a potential well-paying career?
    2) If so, do you hate it so much that you’d rather do this?

my current career pays very well, just under 6 figures last year.
but its not fulfilling as it once was. kinda lost the motivation and ambition for it and i’m not sure why. sure it pays well and pays the bills but the idea of doing it for the next 20years of my life is depressing.
funny enough i never really hated my job but because my goals and ambitions have now switched to try aim for success in the music industry its caused the day job to become a bit of a drag.

honestly one of the best outcomes would for the music to get to a point were it makes up 25%-40% of my income therefore alllowiing me go part time in the day job perhaps doing a 3-4 day working week. thats my initial goal anything but will have to see how things pan out over the next 2 years or so.

so my experience after year 4 is low 4 figures at the end of 2020. most of that came from 60 exclusive tracks i have out there among 3-4 publishers. i guess i might actually be doing better than i initially thought but i guess i just feel it should be more at this stage. i guess my main problem is having so few tracks out there and working a full time day job so if anything the one thing i need right now more than anything is time to write more music.

thanks for sharing your story Lawriter. its interesting your strategy is a lot based around getting thousands more tracks into the system. other long term composers have said to me its not the number of tracks its the quality level of the tracks. for example 500 amazing tracks will go alot further than 3000 mediocre tracks.

just for clarity i consider $60k+ per annum to be full time income.

good relationship with your publishers is vital but its only one half of the coin. there is no point having a good personal relationship with a publisher that provides updates promising you the world and deliver you nothing. so having formed those relationships ensure they perform and deliver for you. if not move on. this is a business at the end of the day so they need to deliver on their half of the bargain and get you opportunities & placements.
to the OP i also feel communication is very important sadly many libraries are terrible at it even the good ones. but anyway the main thing is they deliver for you and from the sounds of your placements that publisher has delivered for you so maybe you need to just accept this is how they do business.

other than BMI not providing cue sheets to our accounts i have zero other issues with them. curious to hear other composers problems with BMI in the name of balance as i dont want to be labelled an ASCAP basher unfairly 🙂

then vote with your feet and resign your catelog to BMI instead. then you’ll get paid. the window is currently open until the end of the year so do yourself a favor and get on it immediately.
