Yeah the DAW eq’s are simple to use and overall sounds pretty good I think. I don’t doubt there are better EQ’s out there, but I don’t feel like I’m missing something with f.ex Logics channel EQ.

Tha Api bundle is also something I’m thinking about. But is there really anything in there that is way better than the stock Logic plugs?

@#tag: how useful are the Kramer/Maserati stuff actually? I konw I probably can get better mixes setting up my own signal chain, but it sure will take me some time.
I was thinking about this ones for situations when it’s not worth the extra hours, and I maybe can save some time with these plugs and still get a very decent and useable result?

Sorry if this beacme too much of a gearslutz thread 😉

Yeah I know. Looking into the Maserati collection. Sounds pretty ok, and can be helpful for the jobs where you need to make a decent mix without spending too much time on it.

This EQ is probably a good deal, but I doubt it can do any magic that can’t be done with my stock Logic or Pro Tools EQ’s.

Merry christmas to all  of you.

Still in holiday mood here, but there was a lot of good reading in this thread. I think MichahelL had one of the best posts, and this really has to be seen as a way of promoting your music in a warehouse. And good promotion is usually not free in any business.

I can`t think of any business in this world that is 100% fair, and I really can`t see any good reasons why RF music business should be any different. Some put more money into marketing than others, and some don`t have the financial capacity but focus on better quality instead. Either way you don`t have any guarantees for success.

I think PPC in general is good to have as an option. But the cost vs results of this service  is something each and one must consider for them selves.

I also deeply believe that AS really has to make it clear to their clients what is paid advertising.

I don`t doubt that this is quite possible Mark, and probably a lot easier than getting a gig with the rolling stones 😉 . My point was just that for the  majority of composers this kind of money will probably not be the result, so the wording “fairly easy” was maybe not the best.

I went to a composers workshop in the UK and I heard that some of the exclusive guys earn over $250k a year fairly easily

Mick Jagger is also making a lot of money fairly easily these days. But most of us doesn`t gig with the rolling stones or write for an exclusive that will pay this kind of $.

“Time will tell as the RF model continues to adapt while new composers continue to flood the RF market.”

We also have to remember that the need for music in various projects has never been higher. The RF libraries might be flooded, but theres no way to argue that there is also a big market for this music and there`s tons of creative film makes buying music every day. My guess is that this demand for well produced RF music will only keep on growing for as long as I can see into the future 🙂

Thanx Art. This is pretty much the same way I do it. Making different titles to the various level of pricing of the libraries. I also use a couple of pseudonyms to avoid price shopping. But I`m not sure if this is necessary or if it`s the best way to do it, so it`s always helpful to hear how other composers deal with this.

    @anon

Do you use a new title and a new pseudonym for each library you submit the song to, or  do  you think it`s enough to use a couple of alternate titles and pseudonyms ?

    Don`t worry Jay, I won`t give up 🙂

Not unless this track actually becomes a bestseller for me. In that case I will probably admit that I don`t know anything about this business and give up…;)

Upload under an alias is off course a way to go, so if you ever see an artist out there with only one, really bad Casio sounding track, then you know who`s the guilty one 😉

Thanks for sharing folks. I just wanted to hear what other people do in these situations. In general I very much agree with Art and work on things till it feels right. This usually takes 10-30 hours of work and I`m most often pretty satisfied with the result.

But every now and then I just have to admit that something was just a bad idea, and I just can`t find any good reason to spend any more time working on it. Maybe it could have sounded ok with a lot of rewriting and arranging, but that would certainly take just as long as writing a new piece from scratch. Probably longer.

In this case I ended up doing a pretty quick mix, and a couple of edits. Not at all proud of the result, but it has this funny “Casio” kind of vibe. I know there`s worse things out there making money so I will probably upload it a couple of places anyway.

Hmmm…this was interesting. I have always thought that you have to go for the libraries that will make you significant backend money, to stand a chance to earn something in this business. But if you can`t get in to the major exclusives, like most of us can`t do, than you might as well go for a bunch of good RF `s I suppose.

Pretty hard to figure out which way to go here. And worst of all, it takes away too much of my time which I would rather spend on making the greatest track ever 😉

Thanks for the info guys !!

    Amazing story.

The thing is that every carpenter has to know his tools. Know your equipment and make it sound great, and people will see you as a genius 🙂 I`m still touring a lot with an late 70`s Korg BX3 hammond clonewhell and a leslie. Not the best gear in the world, but I promise you I know how to make it sound better than every young hipster “wanna be organ player”, with their red flashy modern Nord keyboards. I guess that’s the reason why I still have a lot more gigs than these well educated guys that for sure can play better than me 🙂

A bit off topic I know, but it proves the point that you don`t need the latest modern stuff to do well in music business. Know you tools and make it sound great !
