These links may help with understanding how ASCAP collects data.
VizzahhParticipantYes that sounds about right. I have main themes for 2 shows which aired entire seasons during this Q1 pay period… $0. I haven’t gotten a response back from them yet but I imagine it will be the same as the one you received. Calling ASCAP and speaking to someone gets you the automatic answer: “Wait till next quarter and see if it shows up then…” what a joke.

I don’t have dramatically more success w/ a certain one regarding political ad music. Check out the listings here and you’ll find the ones that people are gravitating towards.
I don’t provide any data for non-lib clients. Usually they hire me to do an attack ad for a candidate maybe in Florida, then a month later they do a very similar ad for a client in Michigan. They like the track I did and cut the new ad to the track. I’d say their knowledge of their back catalog of ads is enough data for them. That said it can be good to put in the title of the track something like “P-N-14” and let them know that means ‘Starts positive, goes negative at :14’

In my experience they do quite well on RF, especially once the cycle ramps up. Some of the more popular ones still sell outside the cycle, I’m guessing because there’s always an election somewhere in the world or parody attack ads, etc..
Never tried to place any exclusively with an APM or similar, probably because I get the best $ from re-licensing the same music to the strategy/prod co, as that’s the deal I’ve struck w/ the ones I work with. Most of the time busy editors don’t have time to search libs, as sometimes the turnaround time for them is 24 hrs to shoot, cut and deliver, so they reach for tracks they’ve already used especially for regional spots..
VizzahhParticipantIf you’re looking for reality type scenes many of those networks post clips up to stream on their website. I’m thinking of Discovery.com, Bravo etc..
Or, some libraries post clips of their music in the context of the show.. like:
VizzahhParticipantWell I think we’re all hoping you move or set up shop soon!
I know I’d feel more comfortable hiring you to rep me on this…
I’ll look into your recommendation and also hit up some colleagues to see who they use.
Thanks!
VizzahhParticipantThanks for the detailed and informative response, Michael. I’ve PM’d you an additional question.
I should have mentioned that I am indeed in the US.
You’re right, I should have presented my license at the start, although it appears that they never even read the document so not sure it would have changed the situation at all.
Their stance at the moment is that I need to prove that they signed something saying that they don’t own the music.. which i know is completely backwards. So I guess I will have to call out the big guns and let them know I won’t be pushed around;)
VizzahhParticipantGreat software, thanks Mark! Any chance there is a way to enable customers to download the mp3 preview file? I know that many customers do like to pull the preview into their project for various reasons before buying, so would be great to allow that if possible…

July 18, 2015 at 10:50 am in reply to: What to do when an exclusive library goes out of business? #22205VizzahhParticipantIf you’re not sure whether the catalog has been sold, and you cannot get in contact with the defunct library, I’d say that is the time to speak with an attorney, if those tracks are worth anything to you going forward
VizzahhParticipantAgreed. Make sure you budget for Vienna Ensemble Pro as well to get these libraries to work at all adequately on one system. I’m on Logic and could barely get a handful of instruments playing simultaneously with Play instances loaded directly in Logic. Using VE Pro my system performance is WAY better, but load times are still pathetic compared to Kontakt. These are really slave system libraries.. Bringing up any of these concerns to anyone at EW is always met with straight denial and/or the classic ‘not running a powerful enough system’. On the other hand they sound great, so there’s that…
VizzahhParticipantI’m using a Kurzweil K2600 with Logic but would like to get something slimmer and with more modern control features. I like to use sustain and expression pedals so having multiple inserts on a controller is also a consideration…
VizzahhParticipantAnyone have any experience with the new Nektar Impact LX series? Looks pretty straightforward and the price is definitely nice for an 88 key controller…
VizzahhParticipantMy experience with them is that they use a company called Music Reports to directly license music. They will try to get you to give them a gratis license but don’t let them:)
VizzahhParticipantEstate sales and thrift shops are the best for finding old and odd instruments on the cheap. I’ve got a thrift shop near me that I walk to when I need a break. In the last few months I’ve picked up a 60’s Oscar Schmidt Autoharp (20 bucks), an ancient Marxophone (10 bucks) and most recently a pair of 60’s Calrad dynamic mics (30bucks). Unbelievable what some folks throw/give away!!
