It’s an interesting subject, the thing is how does an individual, who is a musician, know what their motor skills, or other benifits would be if they had not learned an instrument. I have played piano/keyboards for over 40 years , I would shudder to think of what shape my brain would be in if a hadn’t , sometimes it certainly doesn’t feel like there are fireworks going off LOL. I tend to feel now the benefits of an emotional and cognitive work out. On one hand playing and composing is a structural thing and on the other creative if that makes any sense.

The point is, if you do not understand the RF market, it clients and their needs, you cannot expect to do well

Is really the point isn’t it. I would be on the 1k + point through 6 or so RF libraries. I think to categorise RF music as ‘garage bandy’ is not really applicable as much as it used to be . Sure there is that low budget stuff, but in the mid range there is competition, you have to know your game, and it is constantly evolving business, as all media businesses are.
The only reason I can think of for pro composer and that ilk to diss an entire sector of an industry like that, is primarily fear. Its akin to saying “I was watching TV last night and there was nothing good on, so all TV is bad.

I only know where my music has gone through libraries that report it, it includes major international corporations to the “University of Canberra” and all flavours in between.

    For Pro Composer

“The problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it.

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!”

Nice find Michael, music from my childhood, and some of them still in use today. Great tunes, I am sure you have similar classics across the pond from that era.

Also, NI support (or the company that made the plug in) can’t figure out why the Service Center won’t completely authorize some new software.

Mark this may be related. You have to run NI plugins in standalone mode first for the Service Centre to recognise them on your computer if you are updating. This was /is still an issue. Hope this helps.

Tx Mark, haven’t come across any of these yet, undoubtably will see these and similar as I progress on. I never liked Logic 9 but 10 or Pro X is pretty good so far.

What plugs no longer support Lion? I recently updated my older “farm” computer to squeeze a little more life out of it. I only use it for older East West samples, hosted in VEPRO.

All the new NI stuff is now not Lion supported. And Logic 10 won’t run on it at all. Had to get Logic 10 up and running for a client. Its a bit of a head wrecker but I actually like it as a DAW. Also Spectrasonics amongst many others only support current plus 2 back Mac OS. You can see their point, its enough of a PITA already.

I wouldn’t even recommend Mavericks yet! So many bugs with Kontakt and even weird stuff in Logic. NI are yet to fix a bug I’ve had that made it impossible to use new Kontakt libraries.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks from Lion because some plugins weren’t being supported anymore, and mainly to use Logic 10, works OK here. What issues are you having ?

On the general upgrading question, I won’t change again now until they are 2 releases ahead of me again. In general, software companies support the current and two releases previous. For music there is absolutely no advantage what so ever in using the latest operating systems.

I have one on an ad here in Ireland which still generates money after 15 years. You never know.

    Hi Mick

I have one simple question, if all the stems are reusable surely you are just creating unique mixes each time not original works. Certain stems could very identifiable in a piece and could not the legal term “an ordinary observer” come into play. That is if “an ordinary observer ” perceives it to be the same then it is. By your definition all stems are reusable.

As an example in the opposite way

Also the first piece of music was “created” by the tag happy. Written in a minor key !!! and sounds like a Russian folk tune. didn’t really sound happy to me, that being said with Soundminer etc an editor can pull up thousands of cues that are tagged happy already.

https://vimeo.com/88787873 Our alpha stage of development is coming along nicely. We are working in house on projects for clients from many different media industries. We completed our first alpha project last month for Giant Animation. Here it is!! The score was generated and locked to picture by Xhail, and contains performances from 6 of our composers from different sides of the globe!

Is a quote from their facebook page, the vid voice is Irish so I was intrigued and did a little research. If it contains performances from 6 of our composers then it is not generating music in real time. It is very cleverly combining various stems together all in the same key!!!! There was another system like this that was supported by the BBC I think, the sky didn’t fall then and it won’t now !!

Clever tech no doubt. However rather than worrying about what the computer will do to you, what about what it will do for you.

Accepted wisdom has been to make your fastest machine your master,I assume the 6 core has a faster CPU and both machines have the same chipset, although most DAWs multithread, most plugins don’t. So a big Omnisphere patch or CPU hungry reverb could easily bring a 12 core to its knees as they can only access one core at a time. VEPro does multithread so I would think the 12 core would be the slave running Kontakt.? I have a 6 core 3.33 MacPro and very seldom will a plugin max out a core.

As the guys said SSD for samples seem to be a given these days for the big libraries.
