KubedParticipant
Personally i like the fact that i’m not aware of the majority of my placements until i get the statement.It’s fun to see where your music ended up.
And yes,when people ask me about this business model,i feel like i’m explaining advanced math to my dog!
KubedParticipanti’m on BMI and from my placements so far,there’s only one show that posts on my BMI account the cue sheets before the quarter ends.Still,they only post the # of the episode and which track(s) was used.No info about the duration and how much $ the placement generated,that kind of info comes only with the quarterly statement.
Also,BMI states that if you’ve earned less than $250 in a quarter,the money will be transferred to your next statement (or whenever you exceed the $250 mark – this means you don’t get a statement until you reach $250).At least that’s for those who live overseas,maybe it’s not the same for a U.S. citizen (i’m not sure but i remember something about a very low limit for the U.S. citizens,something like $20?again i could be wrong,maybe someone else could share some info about it)If your track was placed this January/February,then it should appear on your September statement.
And,yes,you’re lucky your library told you this!Usually you only know about your placements when you get the quarterly statements ๐
KubedParticipanthi OverDub,
i had an issue last year with a publisher registering my name wrong to BMI (he wrote my first name wrong).
I’ve contacted BMI (emailed them) and they said there was no problem,they’ll keep both names on my account,in case there are future cue sheets addressed to the wrong name.
They also asked me if i would like to add more artist names to my account.So,send them an email and tell them you want to add more artist names to your account.They usually respond after 3-5 days.
KubedParticipantgreat idea man!
KubedParticipant@Mike Marino: lol,coincidentally i was already familiar with your music!
Earlier this week,i was approached by the same library that released Drowning Abyss.They asked for an EDM album release.I’ve heard several of their works (including Drowning Abyss).Fantastic work (and what an impressive bio!).You’re very diverse,from cinematic adventure to electronic and funk and yet there’s a nice coherence among your tracks.Great songwriting and mixing skills,after listening your catalog i felt inspired and a bit jealous,hehe.
I’ve sent you a pm in soundcloud,just some thoughts regarding the library mentioned aboved.
KubedParticipant@Mike Marino: thanks!do you have any link where we can listen to some of your work?
KubedParticipanthere’s my soundcloud page;
KubedParticipantthere was a significant drop on the money i get from one daily show.I had about 10% less cues on this show in the Q2 of 2014 but the money was like 30-35% less.
I noticed that in Q1 they were paying something like $1-1.2/per sec but in the January statement it was like $0.8/per sec.
I think MichaelL is right.KubedParticipantI am
KubedParticipant@MichaelL: yes,i upload from another computer.I decided to keep my “studio” pc as clean from bugs/viruses etc as i can.But still,i wouldn’t rely just on that,i have 2 clone back-ups and thinking of having a 3rd one soon.Your idea of having a back-up in a safe,outside the house is very good btw.
@Art: ouch!!!that’s a sad story.I don’t want to experience such thing,a real nightmare!
A downside of an offline pc is what M.Nicholas said;some of the softwares demand online registration/updates.And the offline registrations are sometimes a bit of a headache.KubedParticipantsuper-scary stuff!My main pc where i produce music is not connected to the internet,i have 2 anti-virus softwares on it and 2 external hd for back-ups (also never connected these HDs to the internet).
Still,i use flash discs to get stuff from one pc to another so,i wouldn’t say i’m completely safe from such things.
Having multiple clone back-ups is the best way to keep you calm in case Cryptowall finds you!KubedParticipantVery encouraging post.You’re doing very well Alan,i’m sure you’ll exceed the $20K+ mark very soon.From my brief experience so far (started in 2012 with an RF site and had my 1st contract with an exclusive library in January 2013)i get that there are no shortcuts in this biz.
My short story so far:
2012 = $300 (RF)
2013 = $2,400 ($1,300 sync fees + $500 upfront + $600 RF)
2014 = $9,600 ($4,200 PRO + $3,200 sync fees + $2,200 RF)KubedParticipanti also check the “no” box.
KubedParticipantHappy Holidays to all!
“The MLR Fmaily”:sounds like a chronic syndrome!
KubedParticipantyes,they do accept instrumentals but they’re very selective (specific styles) and not as many as vocal tracks.
You can use MLR’S search engine and find hundreds of libraries accepting instrumental music.
