    Thank you Art,

but the article didn’t clarify my doubts unfortunately.

The thing I still don’t understand is if I am eligible of back-end royalties at all when composing a track for a commercial ended on YouTube. Since the number of YouTube views with this client adverts are most often >400’000, this can be quite interesting for me. All the music composed for this and older adv is registered to my PRO.

What should I specify in the contract and (more important) what would change, in terms of $$$, for my client?

    Thank you Art!!!

No Amazon or iTunes before sending the tracks to libraries.
So, in order to send this music to a trailer library (which is the final aim), and in order to make them listen to the tracks:

    1) better to upload on the “public” Soundcloud + watermark?
    2) better to upload the tracks in “private mode”and send them the link?
    3) better to send them directly in other ways?

Unless using an inaudible watermark (which then makes no sense for protecting from illegal uses), don’t you think it would be annoying for potential clients that might listen to your music on Soundlcoud?

    Hi all!

I’ve tried submitting to Soundreef but, since I’m affiliated with a PRO, they asked me to give up my registration with them in order to be able to add my tracks to their library.

I sincerely didn’t understand this. Why Soundreef would want me to do that?

    Thank you.

With “performance free” you mean a track in a RF library with no cue sheet compiled –> no back-end royalties am I right? 🙂

    So…
let me sum-up, if I may:

IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO STATE IF PRODUCTION LIBs ARE BETTER THAN RF LIBs or viceversa.

That said, I think that what Jean Anfossi told us about “reputation” is a key point that should be taken into account when asking ourselves whether to use a pseudonym (especially on RF). In my particular case, since I had the luck to work for BIG client of Fashion and Sport industries for commercials and advertisements (on commission), I most certainly don’t want to degrade myself or spoil the professionalism I have earned in the past 6 years. I certainly don’t want a client to find a top-notch quality work of mine on sale for 14$.

All things considered, PROD LIBs are extremely difficult to get in but might generate better incomes from back-end royalties and from the time that the cost of a license is generally higher; RF LIBs, on the contrary, are easier to get in but require to have a huge amount of material to generate a modest income (and my notion that RF = NO back-end incomes was wrong).

Since any of us is able to gaze into the crystal ball, one should try PROD and RF as well, see what happens and hope in the factor that seems to have the decisive role…LUCK.

    Great info, thank you. 🙂

So, perhaps the best choice for a musician like me who is starting from scratch in this area is to…focus on both 50/50! And then see what happens year after year.

    Cons:
    1. They’re exclusive and sometimes your music just sits.
    2. You give up the copyright.

MichealL thanks a lot for your post!!! This, anyway, sounds strange to my ears. As far as I know, one of the main advantages of Production Music libraries, compared to RF, is the income coming from your Performance Right Organization, am I right? In light of this, how can one give up the copyright of a track?

    Thank you SteveW,

I was referring to the fact that soundcloud links posted on Facebook will force you to open a new browser page. I’m looking for a strategy to post audio that will play directly ON facebook, like Youtube does with video links.

Maybe Reverbnation could be a good choice, thank you!

Thank you Erick and Edouardo. As far as watermarking is concerned, what do you think of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uP4V3_uSok ?

Could it be a wise strategy to add a unaudible watermark, so that it doesn’t annoy the listeners, that can be detected by, for ex, TuneSat?

That’s great! Thank you guys. So I can upload my track on soundlcloud, than no need to worry about the fact that “that track was already on the internet before submitting it to RF libraries”.

Let’s say, instead, that I have a track on audiojungle. I thought I was only allowed to post that track, on soundcloud for example, with the audio watermark. Am I wrong?
