More specifically how does it line up with what we do as production composers.
Don’t know but, as you say, an interesting topic. Never know where technology will lead us.

Art MunsonKeymasterI believe Mark Petrie is doing well with trailer music. Hopefully he will see this thread and jump in.

February 20, 2021 at 6:22 pm in reply to: Can you still use your own music in your own content after selling to a library? #37388Art MunsonKeymasterWhile I want to submit to libraries and register the songs with BMI and AdRev, I also don’t want to get copyright struck if I use some of the songs for some audiobooks I want to produce (stories written by myself).
If not signed to a library you own all rights to the songs and can do whatever you want to them. A copyright strike would not happen with an audio book if not on YouTube. With AdRev you just whitelist your channel.
Once you get into the world of placing your music with libraries, it all depends on the contract. You will most likely have a freer hand with non-exclusive. Exclusive would most likely be more restrictive. Every library contract is different so read the fine print.
Art MunsonKeymasterIs it generally an ok idea to start pitching while you’re still finding your groove,
If you are unsure I would listen to the music on some sites. If you feel you are in the ballpark I would go for it.
As for blackballing: I wouldn’t worry about it. If you have music that a library is interested and you are a reasonable person to work with, I don’t think it would be a problem.
Art MunsonKeymasterMy experience with Folktronica wasn’t great. The style sounds similar to yours, finger picking with electronic elements. Truth is I don’t really know what Folktronica is, I just assumed it was. I pitched it to a number of libraries with no interest except for one but I didn’t like the exclusive deal offered.
They have sold on P5 but I actually remixed some them without the electronic elements and they sell better. That’s just my experience though and YMMV.
February 15, 2021 at 8:13 am in reply to: Is this Scenario Possible? Non-Exclusive to Exclusive Overnight? #37368Art MunsonKeymasterIt would have to be in the contract of the non-exclusive to allow them to do that. Never heard of it happening.
February 14, 2021 at 2:38 pm in reply to: Music Libraries and Music Aggregators That Distribute Music #37358Art MunsonKeymasterPretty much the same answer as here.
Art MunsonKeymasterComing from a non-exclusive library to another non-exclusive library, probably not. If coming from on exclusive library (or non-exclusive) to an exclusive, then it would depend on the terms in the contracts of the exclusive libraries.
Art MunsonKeymasterI still seek other sources of income outside of music licensing and music royalties. I eternally do not trust this business as a stable long term path to earning full time income year after year. I always operate as if it’s going to implode and always have a plan B in play.
Yep!
Art MunsonKeymasterGood topic JD and know exactly how you feel. I have many of the same thoughts.
What may help you, and is true in my experience, is that you could give your “secrets” away (to a point) and there is no guarantee that any of the composers you shared your “secrets” with, would achieve the same results (most likely they would not). There is no one size fits all approach to this frustrating business. I don’t think you have to be that paranoid about it.
Art MunsonKeymasterAre you for a long time with TuneSat?
Over ten years.
Art MunsonKeymasterNo, they do not register with Content ID.
