I would echo what others have said about considering Komplete to get you rolling, since it is a good bang for your buck…
If you really want to get into Orchestral Writing (which it sounds like you do), having Kontakt is going to be a must. Regarding CS2, I think it depends on the types of projects you are working on and the realism you need to convey in your mockups. If the strings aren’t as exposed in the mixes, you might be fine with CS2. I have used CS2 but don’t particularly like the sound as much as others (hope noone jumps on me for that!). This is very subjective territory though, and has been argued on many a forum! Personally, my optimal blend of strings combines LASS and 8Dios Libs and occasionally Spitfire Audio’s stuff (all require Kontakt btw). Yes, you pay dearly for these Libraries but you won’t regret it and neither will your music.
Wait for the right sales (especially around the holidays!) to load up on what you need. I should also mention that I have EWQL’s Hollywood Strings and several other EW libs just sitting on a shelf…Play is just too slow and buggy for my preferences.
Good luck! – B
bradymusicoParticipantRealize this is a bit of a hijack (apologies in advance) but I actually wish we had some way of sharing “off the record”…A Composer’s only section of the forum. I have occasionally wanted to post some thoughts on a library I’ve worked for/with but it’s not necessarily something I’ve wanted to bring up under their listing, particularly since many of the business owners/reps visit MLR. Even if you are posting “anonymous,” in some instances, it would not be hard for the library to put together just who is making certain comments etc. Anyway, this may best be left to an off the record MLR Meetup…have you done one of those before Art? – B

I’m going to call in, as well.
bradymusicoParticipantThey also posted about it on their FB page. Shouldnt this be something we ‘opt’ into…?

Art have you noticed different detections from those separate mixes? Sounds like Wildman is saying he has had some luck with detection of edits from the full track…
bradymusicoParticipantI have not, but I have considered stringing the main cue and all the edits into one long track and uploadng that.
Now that’s an interesting idea…
bradymusicoParticipantTunesat can get pretty expensive if I added all the alternate edits.
Thanks, guscave. I agree, if I included edits, I would be far outside what I want to pay monthly for my catalog. I’m just curious what others are doing and if the fingerprint tech is good enough to distinguish any of the edits from the ‘full’ track, given they are so closely related.
October 3, 2013 at 11:40 am in reply to: Looking for advice regarding writer/producer splits and revenue streams. #12797bradymusicoParticipantI always give my cowriters 50/50 splits across the board, even if I do 95% of the work. Sometimes it’s those little things they bring to the table that result in the track being sold/licensed in the first place. It’s all pie in the sky though, until the piece actually makes money. I’ve seen a lot of colleagues sweat over complex writer/pub/producer splits and many of them are sharing these complex splits of ZERO…
Art is right though, only you can answer what “feels right”. We’re all just speaking from our own bag.
bradymusicoParticipantI’ve made dropbox work for me (with a paid plan of course). However, looks like I might be moving to backblaze! Thanks for that Mark!!!
bradymusicoParticipantSame here…I think they are launching some new search features in the cue sheets area…clearly has some bugs!
bradymusicoParticipantI saw this today. Thought I would share for those using LP X. I know it’s not the most stable alternative to the x32 problem but better than nothing!
http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/logic-pro/how-to-run-32-bit-plug-ins-in-logic-pro-x
bradymusicoParticipantI downloaded X to my macbook pro today (not my studio workhorse!). Have to say that I am quite impressed so far. Really nice synths and Drummer is pretty amazing. The UI is really clean although it is going to take some time to get used to since they have shuffled things around.
I played with the Logic Remote app for the Ipad as well. Very seamless integration and cool to have a lot of MIDI controller options at your iPad fingertips. I’ve used my iPad as a controller before but only for console automation and native apps. Apple did an amazing job developing the app and extending the functionality of X to take advantage of iPad features. I totally lost track of time for a couple hours!
I won’t make the jump until there is some type of workaround for the x32 plugins but I will probably use Logic X and the ipad when I’m on the go. I wish they had a “compatibility” mode to save in for LP 9…
bradymusicoParticipantThere will come a day when very, very few will take the leap of faith to “upgrade” to the new DAW’s for fear that their recent investments (plugs, instruments, etc.) are just going to be relegated to the bookshelf. I’m pretty much there already.
Totally agree. I think many of us are pretty much there. We have to spend so much on plug-ins/VIs to even be competitive and to have some of those tools rendered useless….no thanks!
