I think you guys got a point. All my tracks are hip hop and dance and less then 2 min and I dont really sell good on RF, but really good at broadcast

    The same for me!

The bad and ugly of music licensing revolves around signing contracts, sending music, and never receiving any money.

I think some of the higher-end libraries have a loyal clientele that does not want to shop around and try to find a cheaper price. They have a larger budget, and are satisfied with what they get from the sites.

    Truth.

Are you going to be able to scoop up $2.74 next month with this program?

    I sure hope so.

This doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

Google Drive: you can upload folders in browser (Wow, only provider to do this), synching apparently patchy, can’t pay annually, can’t pay in anything but USD, can’t pay with anything other than Google Wallet

I use Google Drive and pay with a credit card.

This also has 0 to do with what most of us here are trying to accomplish which is placing INSTR music cues on as many shows, films, business videos, spots, and promos as possible or selling hundreds of tracks in RF libraries.

I do not see the need for frustration. It is just a story. I am interested in the story.

Good read Bigg Rome. I have heard of her before and there seemed to be a lot of good hype surrounding her. As we all know, there is always more to the story.

Specifically: P5 lowered its minimum prices for SFX to $2, because of the number of short, approximately 2 second long sounds being uploaded.

I see whole songs going for $2 also. The lowest price you can use is $2. Try searching the site by price and you will see for yourself. These low prices apply to all media (music, SFX, video, photos, etc).

Now you’ve entered the realm of silliness just for argument sake.
How do we know that you aren’t encouraging people to raise their prices to $100 so that you can compete against them by selling at $50.
Do you see how silly that sounds?

Things like this do happen. Business is a beast!

I wish all of you success on your journeys in RF land.

From visiting a great number of royalty free sites, I honestly do not see the potential for composers to make more than a few hundred bucks a month. Even with superior quality, a composer is going up against a large catalog of music. In addition, most of the prices at these sites is way below $100 a cue.

Besides the one guy that sells $20,000 at AS, I have not heard of anyone report on this site that they are doing well from royalty free music libraries. RF libraries seem to be more of a supplemental source of income.

Is it worth it to add less than 500 tracks to a library with over 100,000 tracks? Is it worth it to compete for prices that range between $2 and $50 for most sites? I do not mean to put down all RF sites. But from the news reported here at MLR, I have not seen very many success stories. I definitely want someone to prove me wrong!

    Anybody?!?

I’m sorry, but just want to clarify, you are charging $100 and likely more for the guys who are doing these orchestral pieces which may take a week or so to complete? I’m relatively new to pitching to libraries, although, again, I’ve been a musician for years. Still recommending $100 a track? To date I have about 20 tracks or so I’m pitching, and working on writing more (about 1-2 a week). Short version of my question: You would recommend that for us relative newbies as well as more experienced composers?

    I say “Yes”.

I do not think a musician should base his pricing strategy off of what other musicians are doing. Each musician is an independent contractor and should do what is best for his situation.

I only base my pricing decisions based off of the amount of money that I think is fair for my music. Not to be selfish, but other musicians are not my primary concern when it comes to business unless I am collaborating with them.

    I wouldn’t do anything.

I am not competing at the bottom. So there is no reason for me to be concerned or upset. I know where I stand as far as my talent. I know what price point I am willing to sell my music for.

I would rather NOT make money and stick to my plan than try to play the “down-and-dirty” game. That game is a lose-lose for the majority of participants.

I don’t see the reason for frustration. FMN is a pay-to-play site. It takes sustained effort to make sites like this work for you.

I just would not blame the site.

I know this post is old, but it is possible to get out of exclusive contracts.

I recently got some songs assigned back to me. I explained that my music had been with the library for a few years and I had not generated any income. The library understood and drafted a letter to terminate the contract.

Not all companies will do this, but it is definitely worth asking about. Most libraries understand how tough the business is. If they are not getting any action from holding on to songs, it does not hurt libraries to assign the rights back to the composer.
