Sad part is some desperate composers are probably contacting them to sign up, and others are thinking “Man that’s some really good music, for free!”

I know one MLR participant who probably already signed up thinking how it could lead to bigger and better things such as a staff writer position that pays nothing. HAHAHA πŸ˜› (joke!)

Just to be clear, there are 2 different scenarios that come up…

    (1) A library (or other party) asks you to write custom music for them to spec and wants a percentage of the Writer’s share.

    (2) A library is pitching a production that wants the entire publisher’s share and now asks if you would be willing to split the Writer’s share for non custom/spec cues you put in the library.

The scenarios are similar but not exactly the same. I think the thread was talking more about #1.

Not thrilled with either scenario, but as others have said, every situation has to be evaluated individually based on the pros and cons. Clearly, there are situations whereby giving up some Writer’s share can open doors for you that couldn’t be opened otherwise.

I think if we learn anything in this business it’s that there are no absolutes.

I would enter into these deals. Sometimes they can lead to bigger things, such as becoming a staff writer for the company.

    Not likely!

Generally, since the library is the publisher, they do the registration. You could always check with the library if you are not sure. I would NOT go ahead and register it without checking first since it might complicate things unnecessarily.

I think having a thread “Anonymous Posting” is just asking for more ridiculous, unproductive, unhelpful bickering. But not MY sandbox. If it were my sandbox, I’d delete any post that serves no purpose except to put down someone else. And I’d get rid of THIS thread because the rules have been laid down already. JMHO.

Can’t you (whoever is involved!) just STOP? Is the last word THAT f**king important to you?

As a general internet forum rule , you should probably take no ones advice 100% but judge the quality of their posts and then decide if that info holds some weight. If you decide it doesn’t move on.

I can’t believe this conversation is even continuing. The guy who runs the site says posting under different names is not allowed. So that one should be over and done.

As far as everything else, MHO is enough already!

Regardless of viewpoint, if someone feels the need to constantly change what name they use when they post, I doubt their credibility.

For the sake of clarity, I wasn’t addressing the Scripps situation. I was speaking in regard to blanket licenses in general and, though I didn’t clarify it, was referring to libraries that ask for an exclusive agreement with the composer. To me the non-sharing of blanket licenses isn’t quite so egregious in the context of non-exclusive agreements as it is with exclusives. At least with the non-exclusive agreement you have the choice to market the music elsewhere and the library can’t brand themselves as exclusive which increases value for themselves as it diminishes value for the composer.

Yes, that’s the crux of it. Thanks for saying it so well, Kiwi.

If it weren’t for a certain company whose name starts with “F”, I would have never gotten started making placements on TV. I still get introduced to new libraries every day because of them. Not all the libraries that run listings are ones I want to sign with but some are.

Also, don’t forget that here on MLR people tend to use the word “library” to mean a very wide range of library types from the lowest end RF to the super high end exclusive.

Of course I agree that one should always be cautious when plopping down $$$.

But the bottom line is “Never say NEVER”… Every situation is unique.
