September 12, 2017 at 1:27 pm in reply to: The manipulation behind "music briefs" for exclusive libs. #28196BEATSLINGERParticipant
Hello to all. This is a great thread!! I though am not so sure about all the pessimistic viewing of the current state of this industry; or the hopeless doom and gloom. Some of us have had to survive, and adapt through several twists & turns of this “Idiotic business called sound”.
* I agree with diversifying how your tracks are being exploited, and see what ways are working best for you. For some, RF Libraries seem to be working. For some NE is working; and some are having success in combination of having a handful (or two) of Exclusive Libraries thrown in.
* If this is something that you really want to do because you love music, and hope to make a living at this. I say keep doing it, and adjust your business to suit your personal needs.
* Work towards thinking clearly, and pragmatically about each move. Do a lot of research, and implement/Formulate a strategic plan. Hasty moves are setbacks!
* You are only as good as your product. You are not in competition with anyone except yourself. Keep raising your bar, and work towards ONLY submitting Quality pieces of material that you would be proud of!!As far as quality vs quantity. When I first got into this side of the industry about 12 years ago. I was working with a “Entertainment Consultant” that had me signing a TON of exclusives. I did HUNDREDS of Tracks/Cues within a 2 year period, and saw ZERO money.
After re-grouping, and re-evaluating what I needed from music to consider it even worth my time. I decided to put “Themed CD’s” together and shop them to exclusives.
From March 2016 to August 2017: One CD alone (15 songs) that I did for a “Non A List Exclusive Library” has received over 900 TV, and Film placements.
This is just to say that maybe for some a 1000 Tracks was not enough. I still feel in my heart that it is about having great quality over quantity.
BEATSLINGERParticipantHow about this..
Google “Them” and put complaints in there to go along with it.
BEATSLINGERParticipantIf this is directed towards me. I stand behind what I said. I was not personally a member, because I have been in “The working side of the music industry for a number of years” and this was something I personally did not need. I have no reason to bash anyone, but my truth is my truth..
BEATSLINGERParticipantOnce again I am grateful for the “”Transparent Candor” that happens on the MLR Forum!! Growing some-what tired of SESAC, and not really seeing the benefits. When hearing about the new ASCAP Royalty Rates; I figured it was a good time to think about jumping ship. I am VERY glad that I did my research before switching into a even worse situation!!
Still thinking about going back to BMI. I am awaiting results/royalty reports from some major placements, and will make my decision then..
BEATSLINGERParticipantI’ll chime in here. I tried with that [removed] company three different times over the couple of decades they have been in existence and I saw no value, subjective reviews and a bunch of money out the door. YMMV though. 😉
Many years ago, when the [removed] was first starting to do their conferences. A friend, who was a member invited me to an event in Pasadena. I saw a LOT of people that I knew, asked them how they were affiliated; and it turned out that they were paid to be there, and pretty much all of them didn’t really think much about the company (this was including people that were on the board of this organization)
Long story short, I got drunk off my ASS; saw the founder of the company, and had a “real Heart to Heart”. Found out that he wasn’t a bad guy; just kinda “mis-represented himself, and what his organization has done”..
I hope that it has improved, but the more I looked into it the more dissatisfied people I found..
BEATSLINGERParticipantVery Good Work!! I though feel like the Violins, when they came back in on the second part through to the end of the composition; were MUCH better than in the first part!!
BEATSLINGERParticipantHell to All!
Alan, great story! I commend you on continuing your growth!!
BEATSLINGERParticipantUNFORTUNATELY, this is “One of The Newer Scams that is taking place; to PREY ON, and PIMP the Newbies out of their Bread!!”
Yes, there are some reputable companies out there, but as Music1234 said:
The “Briefs” and “Deal Boards” and “Music Wanted” scene is definitely spinning out of control.
Once again, anyone that is here on this forum has a HUMONGOUS advantage; simply by being able to read the reviews, and study up on the companies best suited for their type of Music/Cues!!
BEATSLINGERParticipantHello to all. I gave up years ago the “Ambiguous lead from a agent/super; looking on the behalf of a major company/TV Show/Artist looking for XYZ material”. Then you pay a submission fee per each consideration..
BEATSLINGERParticipantThis is in response to Chuck. If I am not mistaken Drums (Unless taken from a actual record) contain no melody, or musicality. So they would not be considered a part of a composition. Purchased Loops and Beats (from construction kits, plug ins, Reason, Kontakt, etc.,) that contain no musical parts are safe.

HA! Sounds like it, but 30 years apart! I had my main run. Time to let the “young lions” have fun.
Once again, we DO sound like the same school!!
August 20, 2017 at 3:24 pm in reply to: What's your number? What are your earnings expectations? #27975BEATSLINGERParticipantLOL!!! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard tracks where somebody is using loops and adding parts in the wrong key or playing out of time!!!
This starting to sound more like a Roasting; than constructive criticism. Be nice You BIG Bullies!
(I’m chuckling MY ASS OFF over here)
August 20, 2017 at 3:03 pm in reply to: What's your number? What are your earnings expectations? #27972BEATSLINGERParticipantThe difference between quality and not so much in production music often stems from how lazy or skilled the composer is in their approach to production. Do they put the effort into using the mod-wheel or editing controller data to make their samples sound convincing or do they play samples like a keyboard?
we might be from the same school.
August 20, 2017 at 2:54 pm in reply to: What's your number? What are your earnings expectations? #27970BEATSLINGERParticipantI have spoken to a few Music Supervisors and these particular guys say that simplicity is the key in most que music. They don’t care if you play guitar like SVR or orchestrate like Mozart.
It once again goes back to Michael L, and a point I made as well. Unfortunately, “A LOT of this industry doesn’t realize it is making bad Cues, and lousy music.lol ”
It’s like having on multiple colors that don’t match, or make any sense in combination. Bass lines COMPLETELY out of the key of the song. Piano parts that don’t match that; and let us not forget about Chords that don’t fit ANYTHING in the song being thrown in for added measure..
August 20, 2017 at 2:39 pm in reply to: What's your number? What are your earnings expectations? #27968BEATSLINGERParticipantI am hoping this might shed some light on quality vs quantity. I have literally heard cues with one part that were absolutely brilliant. As well, I have heard cues with TONS of parts that ended up being absolute Garbage.
The truth is “Once you have invested a good amount of time learning the ins and outs of your craft; and have learned how to achieve the sound/composition you were looking to create. No matter what you play/compose it will be to a certain standard of quality”. How complex a Cue is does not make it better. It’s knowing how to put together solid, well crafted, and sonically accurate pieces; that get the point across.
