MM_MusicworksParticipant
Thanks Musicmatters and Kubed for your kind replies.
I have been doing decently in the RF segment… but, as you say, its basically turned into a dead end… doesn’t seem to be any growth prospects there.
@Musicmatters… Thank you! With the RF segment the way it is, I’m trying to focus more on the exclusive library side of the business… while not completely giving up on the RF side. Write, submit, forget… great words… 🙂
@Kubed, Thanks for your advice… The 30 tracks are not all for custom requests… maybe about 10 to 15 are… the others are general uploads in genres based on my talks with the library… I will begin searching for another exclusive library to put my eggs into… Meanwhile, I’m dying of excitement to receive my first backend payout… small as it may be… 🙂Thank you both once again!

If you are a foreign writer with BMI (Like I am), you have to fill out the W8-BEN tax form to let them know you live in a country that has a tax treaty with the US. That way only 10% (as in your country) will be deducted before its remitted to you as against the usual 30% in case your country does not have a tax treaty with the US.
This is also true for income deriving from US sales at RF sites like AJ.
I am not aware of how other non RF libraries would handle sync payments as it hasn’t yet happened for me.
HTH!
MM_MusicworksParticipantHi Art!
Yes… that’s what I’ve done usually… play some chords… maybe add a beat… come up with a melody… record gibberish place holder melodic vocals … build track… write lyrics… then record final lyrics…
I’m tying to find alternative approaches in order to save time… as quantity matters almost as much as quality in the library game…. and sometimes I find myself noodling around needlessly… especially when I’m producing vocal tracks.
Thanks for your valued insight Sir.
MM_MusicworksParticipantThanks Art and Michael! So you write the lyrics first? With me its usually the melody that pops in first. And I find recording the scratch demo vocals to work around the track makes it easier for me to make creative decisions. I will try working on the lyrics first and see if that speedens things up…
Its so fascinating to see how different creative workflows are.
Thanks again!
MM_MusicworksParticipantWish everyone a Merry Christms! 🙂
MM_MusicworksParticipantI fully respect the opinions on this topic from the vets… you guys are obviously speaking gospel truth from your long term experiences.
From my perspective Jesse’s Sync Academy works because there are a wealth of tutorials, a vibrant community and the per month cost is very low. For a new comer like me (a little over a year old), it offers guidance on a general framework that I can adopt to approach this always shifting and nebulous world of TV / Film licensing libraries. The community offers their own guidance and moral support if you’re feeling discouraged for any reason. Needless to say, you use some info and others, you discard.
Just like info I gleaned from various forum and library topics here at MLR, there is a good amount of knowledge one can extract from that service too. Using both info sources, I personally feel I have gotten a decent start at a much rapider pace than I would have in their absence.
As always, everything I say is true only for myself. YMMV is the only reality in this business.
MM_MusicworksParticipantYes I am.
MM_MusicworksParticipantThanks for the reply Nicholasrobertsmusic… Guess for now its a wait and watch situation…
MM_MusicworksParticipantI’d recommed Sync Academy by Jesse Joseffson… Its very reasonably priced , has all the info you need on licensing and an active community..
MM_MusicworksParticipantExcellent! Very inspiring!

It works for me because I dont have a page aimed to the public… I use SC only for library pitches. I know when my pitch is heard and thats enough for now.
Crow… Yes, looks like its business as usual for now.

Thanks. For your reply.
Do you mean SC or Distrokid?
Thanks
