The Perfect Music Library

It’s been three months since I started this site. In those three months there have been over 1100 comments from music creators and library owners. Based on those comments and users varying degree of experiences, I started thinking about what the “The Perfect Music Library” would look like.

So here’s some things I would start with (in no particular order):

1.) 50/50 split license fee
2.) Writer retains all the back end PRO monies
3.) No re-titling
4.) Non-Exclusive
5.) Writer can set own sync fee
6.) Submit via upload for acceptance
7.) Once accepted, FTP upload. PLUS, the ability to upload a file to populate the database. No more pointing, scrolling, clicking and then waiting for the page to refresh!
8.) Option for library to create watermarked preview file or upload your own.
9.) Is diligent about cue sheets being filed
10.) If each submission is to be reviewed: There should be a quick way to submit, without filling all the data upfront, only to be told later that the piece was rejected.
11.) Letting you know if a piece is rejected.

I’m sure there are many things I’ve left out, so what would you like to see?

Music Library POV

I would like to add a new feature to MusicLibraryReport.com called “Music Library POV”. It would offer the opportunity for music libraries to discuss their “Point Of View” on their company’s philosophy and business model and to comment on other aspects of the music library business. I think this would be an excellent way for both the music creators and the library owners to better understand each others needs and requirements.

Some points might be (in no particular order):

1.) Your company’s philosophy.
2.) Type of business model (royalty free, traditional) and why you chose it.
3.) How long you have been in business.
4.) Credits
5.) Your history in the music business.
6.) How do you feel about re-titling.
7.) What is the average income a user makes with your company.
8.) Do you specialize in one particular genre of music.
9.) Does the proliferation of so much music and so many music libraries online detract from anyone making a decent income.
10.) Best “format” to follow when creating a cue.

If you have any ideas on what you would like addressed please leave your comments.

Updated all the libraries

I have all the music libraries updated with much more detail, including links to each library’s web site. Some of the libraries web sites are more transparent than others but we are making progress in learning as much as we can about each one. If you have any information to help further a library’s information screen it would be appreciated.

I have also added a more in depth searching capability. As an example, you can search just for libraries that are accepting submissions.

There are now about 160 libraries on the site and nearly 600 comments. Lots of great info there about music libraries in general as well as individual libraries.
