Hey yall, received my 4th check from BMI recently (im up but far from projections) and would like to ask the folks generous enough to contribute their journey to this thread (Alan, scott, groovydude, kubed, eduardo, frequencee, spiker, daveydad, mike marino) how their trajectory is going so far (still upward, plateaued/hit ceiling, downward trend) since their reveal….thanks in advance
with these troubled times within the industry and the pandemic, I am grateful to have found MLR to get a sense of comfort and community, amidst this solitary emotional roller coaster of a journey we all trek….stay safe yall
boinkeee2000Participantnot gonna out the lib as they do get me backend placements, and theiyre 1 out of only 2 that does that for me….time will tell how this goes as i try to move up on that tier ladder and get better opportunities
boinkeee2000Participantits less of a sting for the next gen cause there’s no past statements they can compare to. kinda like the employee who got a paycut and another who started at that wage. outlook & expectations will be different
i can imagine what the vets payouts would be back in early 2000s with their current catalog and placements…whoa
boinkeee2000Participantthanks Michael & LA for the clarification…so its safe to estimate that folks who started out within the past few years would hit a ceiling thats 1/3 what the vets make in a decade or so (if on the same trajectory) unless something changes with streaming and PROs, making a full time “livable” wage on this industry almost impossible for the next gen…sad
boinkeee2000ParticipantLAWriter, trying to make sense of your numbers…if you tripled your placements, and assuming your getting same placement stats as 3 years go, if my math is correct, then its BMI that has decreased payouts by 1/3?
boinkeee2000ParticipantCongratz skies! thanks for keeping this thread alive…if i may ask you fivers hows your intl royalties looking compared to domestic?
boinkeee2000Participantcongratz daveydad, are you over your 5 years on this? im just now seeing intl royalties on mine (3rd check)
boinkeee2000Participantthat validates the same horror stories im reading with M.E (which i didnt opt in) everything is coming full circle…so sad the state of stock music is in…
December 30, 2019 at 2:51 pm in reply to: Ok to divulge current NE library to possible new EX one? #33911boinkeee2000Participantsame here, main source of income is performance…Im a MD for a specialty band, a sessionist for artists from my country touring here, and also perform with cover band and my own singer/songwriter group. gotta pay the bills right? keep spinnin them plates and good luck….
December 30, 2019 at 2:03 pm in reply to: Ok to divulge current NE library to possible new EX one? #33909boinkeee2000Participantto be honest JD right now for me its about playing all the angles. you’ll never know which doors will close and when new ones will open ….so top tier, mid tier, low tier exclusives, excl & nonexcl RF, song focused libs, even beat stores are on my 2020 to do list. time to get my work on….let me know if it works out for you (going semi-excl)
December 30, 2019 at 1:22 pm in reply to: Ok to divulge current NE library to possible new EX one? #33907boinkeee2000ParticipantJD, i thought the same before per cannibalizing myself as well. but theres too much competition out there and its already hard enough to make money or be discovered as it is. i dont know if my music has been shopped around since i dont bother retitling anymore, and frankly at this point i really dont care where i get my sale. there’s only 26 nonexcl nonrf libs left on the database, most praised traditional nonexcl libs before are now excl, and the top 2 rf libs made changes this year that hurt me big time, not to mention if one does good the other does bad for that month ALWAYS…its not looking good out there and betting on just one library’s policy with no guarantees is a much bigger gamble than spreading my nonexcl catalog around….just my exp on the current landscape,,,again YMMV
December 30, 2019 at 10:17 am in reply to: Ok to divulge current NE library to possible new EX one? #33899boinkeee2000Participantmost of my nonex are also in RF, which was an issue to some libs thus they wont accept unless taken down, which defeats my purpose of them being nonex…
boinkeee2000Participanthi CMM, welcome aboard! in order to get more specific guidance on your journey, the folks here need to know where your at. maybe you dont need the basics, maybe you dont need to pay for any courses. maybe all you need to do is start submitting and getting your feet wet….
do you have any tracks your willing to post for feedback? whats your music production background? whats your studio setup? what are your strengths?
also, I think its still best to read up on all topics here, sometimes cetrain threads unrelated to your questions gets derailed but sprouts good info applicable to you…
boinkeee2000Participantwhoa, this turned ugly quick…who spiked the eggnog?!?
boinkeee2000Participant“gold mine” is such a false analogy…the only treasure involved here is what you create (if they see it as such), and the challenge is finding the right investor who can turn it into profit (and not screw you over)
