The music business is changing daily, and our corner of it just as quickly. There is no point complaining of what it used to be like, I would regularly get €10-15k commercials gigs in Ireland !!!! That was 25 years ago, if keep pining for that I would go mad.
There seems to be a lot of focus on AJ, and I get the model, what really irks me is the PRO thing. I really don’t see the issue and it seems very unfair especially in the situation where the licensee does not pay a performance royalty.
None of you guys have mentioned one crucial factor. The joy of doing what you love far outweighs many financial gains. When i look at the guys doing the 9 to 5 through several hours of traffic, i feel truly blessed.

True, or I would not still be making music after 50 years. But (and it’s a big but) I still need a scorecard and the dollars are a good way to keep track. There is not much percentage (at least for me) to let them sit on a shelf. Been there, done that!

Why do you think I left law and went back to music? Why do you think I’m selling the big crib? …So that I can do what I love, which at this point in my life is writing production music.

I am in. I just uploaded 200,000 tracks to 200 royalty-free sites. Prices are 59 cents for full songs with vocals, 39 cents for instrumentals, and 29 cents for 60 second versions. Everything below 60 seconds is only 9 cents. 🙂
Anyway, royalty free music is what it is. If you can compete, go for it. If not, do not even worry about it. There are enough marketplaces for any musician to be successful in some regard.
