ok, after reading what all you guys have written, Im gonna start doing these edits as well.
I guess its easiest to do the full track, whack 2 minutes off it, tidy that up, render, then whack another 30 seconds off that, and then finally then 15.
Just working backwards all the time.

The thing I’m not sure of now is, how do I keep them all together on pond5 ?
Im sitting here patiently waiting on 5 tracks I’ve uploaded to be reviewed so I can get on with it, so i’ve no idea yet what the page with my tracks looks like yet.

It would be great if there was some way to group the main track, bed, 1 minute, 60sec,30sec and 15sec together, so that any buyer can see they are children of the parent track.

Thats actually what Im doing right now.
Made a spreadsheet called “My potentially Licenceable Tracks”, with fields like mood, genre, speed, description, what edits are needed?, etc…
It’ll probably take a week to catalogue 300+ tracks, but im hearing a lot of potential in older stuff where I had some great core ideas, but just didn’t possess the technical knowhow then to make them sound as good as I wanted. I’ll most likely cut a lot of them in half, and rejig and repurpose stuff so they are more useful / functional.

    Thanks =)

Yeah, I was making music with a totally different aim in mind then, but Im sure a lot of them can be repurposed and shrunk to a third of their size because the melodies and stuff are already there, and its money for old rope that wouldn’t be selling unless someone happened to stumble on it from my soundcloud link or whatever….

I’ve only decided to fully focus on library music in the past week and have have made 5 short tracks….2 to 3 minutes, with immediate intros, and I intend to have at least 300 of those made and uploaded within the year.

What im finding difficult is organization.
Up until now i’ve saved the data file, and a folder of the tracks stem files, but never bothered to categorize by mood, style, or anything else that would make it easier on myself to search, if I needed a track in a rush.
I’ve made so much music, have a poor memory, and cant remember most, except for my personal favourites.

Whats the best way to organize, just from the position of preserving your own sanity ??

I have about 300, possibly more, tracks that are sitting on my bandcamp, which aren’t selling because I suck at promotion, and therefore no-one really knows they’re there.
I’ve made £800 off them, but thats over years.

I didnt write them with music libraries in mind, but I know some of them can definitely be used, although some may be 5 or 6 minutes long and need to be tweaked to get to the punchline quicker, so basically, I have a large back-catalogue that can be monetized.

I’m in a horrible situation and need to earn something fairly quickly. I don’t want to sell my music for peanuts as I believe its worth more, but just until I can get my head above water, Im thinking about RF sites.

I know this is a long game. Im prepared for that. My wife might not be, but im mentally prepared.
I’ve already signed an exclusive contract for 3 or 4 tracsk, that go onto compilations along with other similar tracks, so they could be slow-burners.

I have some good music but I dont want to sell it short, by putting it on RF sites, just because I HAVE to right now, and then discovering its worth much more than I had anticipated.

the biggest question I have, and its loosely related to all this , is…

If I use a track on a RF site and price it at £50, just to test the waters, and it starts selling ( I read one example on here of a track that was priced at £16 which about 2,000 uses ), and I think, ok, I’d now like to pitch this to a non-exclusive site or exclusive, would I have essentiallu shot myself in the foot by releasing on RF because the track is screwed forever, and the non-ex and Ex companies wouldn’t then want anything to do with it ?

I’ve read the forums and read things about crucialmusics dealing with rumblefish, and opting everyone in, rather than giving them the option to opt out.
Im just trying to avoid companies who treat contributors with disrespect.
Im also not willing to submit to a company who wants a 75% share and will only pay me 35%. That kind of behaviour cheapens what we do and contributes in a “race to the bottom”

Looks like i’ll be spending weeks reading and trying to make sense of “terms and conditions” rather than actually making music.

Hold on a minute….I didnt ask to be “spoon fed”

I’ve read most of the forum. Last night I read every single composer interview one after the other.

Im prepared to put in the graft. There are nights I dont sleep at all.

There is plenty of info here on what to do, how many tracks, the potential etc…

I didnt ask for a golden ticket. I asked what would be the general consensus on which libraries to avoid. That is not the same thing.

I didnt say “yo, im so lazy…gimmee a list of paying sites”, and if you think thats what I was asking, you need to go back and read what I wrote a second time.

    Thanks Art =)
so is it wise to just register everything with PRS then, regardless of whether its for RF, or non-ex ?

How will that then work if I want to put my music on an RF site under a psuedonym ?

I was all ready to go with pond5, but I had to upload a photo of my passport for ID purposes, which they have to verify, and it can take up to 7 days.
    Is that normal procedure ??

    Thanks for the welcome guys.

I’ve registered on pond5, as it seems to be the best. Im now waiting for my passport photo to be verified before I can upload anything

Sent links to musicloops but they have to be reviewed, so I’m waiting on that too

Any other sites you would recommend ?

I’ve made 10 albums over the last 15 or so years, plus another 3 “archives” that have 150 tracks between them.

In total, I’ve made £800 in sales from bandcamp, and my last album cost me £50 to get mastered, and I made £42 from album sales, so I find myself pushed into composing primarily for music libraries and abandoning my dream of being the next Juan Atkins or Boards of Canada.

I emailed 40 libraries with links. 38 of those said they would respond in 6 to 8 weeks, but never did. 1 library absolutely loves my music and I signed an exclusive contract for 3 tracks, and they want more.
That was 4 or 5 months ago, and I have no idea if those tracks have been used, and i’ve heard nothing from the library. Another library responded very favourably, but I got so caught up with signing the exclusive contract that I can’t remember what they said.

I had to give up work due to sickness, and im now practically skint, so RF sites, although I hate what they stand for, are something I’m very interested in , in the short-term, just until I get my head above water again financially.
I don’t want to sell my music for peanuts, but at this present time, I feel I have no choice.
