in reply to: What Genre of Library Music Sells The Best? #43517

That’s a very broad question and I don’t believe you will find a simple answer but:

Look at the trends. What genres are popular in film, TV, and advertising? What kinds of music are people listening to on streaming services? You can use tools like Google Trends and Spotify Charts to track trends and see what’s popular.

Check out library music websites. Most library music websites have a section on their homepage where they highlight the most popular and in-demand genres. You can also browse their catalogs by genre to see what they have to offer.

Here are some of the most in-demand and saleable genres for library music in 2023 (or any year):

Hybrid genres. Hybrid genres that combine elements of different styles, such as pop-rock, electronica-jazz, and hip-hop-classical, are becoming increasingly popular.

World music. World music from all over the globe is in high demand, especially for documentaries and travel shows.

Ambient music. Ambient music is often used in corporate videos, commercials, and films to create a sense of mood or atmosphere.

Cinematic music. Cinematic music is perfect for trailers, film scores, and video games.

Upbeat, positive music. Upbeat, positive music is always in demand for commercials, advertising, and other media.

Ultimately, the best way to choose genres for library music is to write music that you love and that you think is unique and original. If you’re writing music that you’re passionate about, it’s more likely to resonate with others and be successful.

Congratulations on landing the deal Brian!

Radio ad royalties can vary depending on a number of factors, including the size of the radio station, the type of ad, and the length of the campaign. In general, however, you can expect to earn anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars per airing.

For a full year of terrestrial and internet radio worldwide, you could potentially earn several thousand dollars. However, it’s important to note that this is just a ballpark figure, and the actual amount you earn will depend on a number of factors.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

The size of the radio station: The larger the radio station, the more listeners it has, and the more royalties you will earn.

The type of ad: If your ad is played during a prime time slot, you will earn more royalties than if it is played during a less popular time slot.

It shouldn’t be a problem if you remove from the library. It’s been my experience that Identifyy does not issue copyright strikes unless you request it. They will collect and pay you any royalties due.

I am not a lawyer, this is just my 2 cents. 🙂

I think it’s worth it to have a site with direct links and the ability to sell licenses. If you do decide you might read this article.

The tax form you need to submit to the Italian publisher/library is the W-8BEN form. This form is a certificate of foreign status that allows you to claim a reduced rate of withholding on your Italian royalties. The W-8BEN form is available on the IRS website.

To complete the W-8BEN form, you will need to provide your name, address, taxpayer identification number (TIN), and country of residence. You will also need to check the box that indicates that you are a resident of the United States and that you are not subject to Italian taxation on your Italian royalties.

Once you have completed the W-8BEN form, you should send it to the Italian publisher/library. You can also send the form to the IRS, but this is not required.

Here are the steps on how to submit the W-8BEN form to avoid double taxation of 30%:

Go to the IRS website and download the W-8BEN form.
Complete the form and sign it.
Send the form to the Italian publisher/library.
Keep a copy of the form for your records.

“Further most people don’t have the type of catalog I have with the type of uses I have so that could be a factor as well.”

I’d venture to say your situation is markedly different than most composers here. I do know I am not the only on MLR who has had the same experience with AdRev versus Identifyy.

As far as the other questions you asked both AdRev and Identifyy had basically the same catalog and metadata.

I have had no problems with customer service on Identifyy. A bit slow at times but nothing critical.

Money-wise, ballpark, about 10 to 1. I didn’t get too far into the weeds with this as I am happy I made the switch. YMMV.

“Some people who had/have been claiming Identifyy pays better really didn’t have their facts straight whom I spoke with about it.”

Not true in my case. Identifyy paid much, much better than Adrev.

Sounds like you need an attorney who specializes in licensing.

    But, my two pennies worth.

As far as YouTube Content ID goes you could just collect the royalties and not issue Copyright strikes. That’s generally what Identifyy does and could be very lucrative.

I would not give up the the Copyright on the new piece. I would give them an exclusive license, for a fee, for x number of years, on just the game. You could renegotiate for a new term as you approach the end of the first term. The success of the game might determine what those terms might be.

As for broadcast rights: You would still get paid as writer and publisher as long as you did not opt to sell them the Copyright.

I’m not a lawyer and, again, just my two cents worth.
